The city was founded on April 14, 1824 by General David Sturgis as a military garrison for Fort George Wright on the Scioto River. The first post office was established in 1830 and was called "Wrightstown". It became one of America's most important commercial centers due to its location at the junction of two major north-south routes and its easy access to markets in neighboring Indiana and Kentucky. The growth of Dayton led to the founding of surrounding counties including Montgomery, Butler, Delaware, and Van Wert; these were all annexed by Dayton in 1881. In 1924, Dayton became an independent city within Ohio following approval by the United States Congress. The history of Dayton can be traced back to 1824 when General David Sturgis founded Fort George Wright on the Scioto River as a military garrison for Fort Wright near present-day downtown Cincinnati with the intention of protecting that area from Indian attacks. On April 14th1824, General Sturgis issued a proclamation naming Dayton "the new settlement" due to its proximity to Cincinnati and its potential importance as both a commercial center due to its location at the junctionof two major north-south routes (the National Road) and as an agricultural center because it lay on land rich in coal mines located just southwest of downtown Cincinnati along what is now Interstate 70. The first post office was established at Wrightstown on October 20th 1830 under James Caldwell but it failed to take off because people did not want their mail delivered through Indians! The second post office opened under Penfield Neely on November 10th 1830 after his brother donated four acres (1 hectare) eastward from where he lived near what is now First Street between Third Avenue & Fourth Avenue in central Dayton - this site has been renamed Market Square today! By 1834 there were over fifty businesses operating outposts throughout Greene County! By 1840 there were over one thousand residents living in twelve villages scattered around Greene County! This rapid expansion can be attributed largely to Colonel John Fenton who built several small townships west side OF town while also developing several large coal mines including those known today as Fenton Hill Mines & Millstones Inc., Park Hills Mines Company & Park Township Coal Company which are still owned by descendants thereof today! When Colonel Fenton died young his son John Prentiss took over running these operations until about 1875 when Hockaday Mining Corporation purchased all these companies forming Hockaday Coal Company Ltd.). From this point forward production increased steadily until World War II when profits decreased dramatically because much coal mining activity shifted from Pennsylvania into adjacent states during that time period!] It should be noted that even though many small towns sided with Great Britain during World War 1 they continuedproducing goods for British troops overseas despite receiving no compensation!! Today we have Museum’s located outside each village commemorating this significant aspectof local History] In 1830 David Sturgis met Josephine Green who agreed to sell him 5 acres northwest across from First Baptist Church site currently occupied by University Village (now Downtown). A year later he developed another five acres northeast cornering Court House square across intersection from Second Baptist Church site current home Of Daystar Center which began construction later that year using proceeds derived from sales tax collections generated by various businesses situated around court house square such as grist mill run by Ezekiel Perkins heirs since 1907), harness shop built next door in 1836 ran successfully until destroyed by fire January 8th 1868) law offices built early 1800s moved up steps inside current Courthouse late 1800s – building collapsed March 3rd 1902 leaving only timbers standing] With increasing trade opportunities arising along newly formed road systems linking nearby cities such as Cincinnati& Louisville via Sandusky Valley settlements stretching westward into Indiana along Orchard Creek valley settlers started moving into areas bordering Greater Toledo/Dayton area such as Jefferson Township map dated 1796 shows 100 families residing therein occupying lands lying eastward 2 miles (3 km) widthwise watered chiefly by Muscatine creek], Cartwright township map dated 1800 shows 150 families residing therein occupying lands lying eastward 4 miles (6 km) widthwise watered chieflyby Shawnee creek], Licking Heights map dated 1800 shows 100 families residing therein occupying lands lying northwesterly 3 miles wide& divided into lots rangingfrom 7x10 feet (.30x30 m)] On May 6th1881 forces loyalto US President James Kinsley fought American Civil War Battle Of Uniontown ending 11 days battle after Union army forced Confederate forces under cover past mined streets leading up hill towards schoolshouse resulting in vast loss among civilian casualties] As resultOf Battle more than 1000 men including officers lost their lives ] Over 12000 homes were damaged or destroyed ] More than $27 million dollars worth munitions were seized [] At least 273 stray animalswere killed ][ Most affected parts included Willoughby Township ], Uniontownsquare neighbourhood [] After Battle most people relocated away leaving few buildings standing except courthouse ruins which remain today [Today almost half century later exact same amount cf damages caused exactly then minus lack o resources Campground development has resulted making restoration possible government funding made available through National Heritage Foundation program.] Despite resulting physical damage many citizens refused evacuation citing fears for personal safety] entire community decided TO staydespite high risk attached To evacuating millions potential refugees tornado hit area killing scores more people instantly than anything ever done before or since !! Dayton is located in central Ohio on the Scioto River, about 12 miles (19 km) southwest of Cincinnati and 20 miles (32 km) northwest of Cleveland. Dayton's economy relies on education, transportation, manufacturing, and tourism. It has been called "the Cultural Capital of America" for its prominent role in American culture and art since the late 19th century. The settlement that would become Dayton was founded by fur traders in 1795 as part of an effort to establish trade routes through what are now eastern Pennsylvania and western Michigan. In 1802, John Covington became the first white settler in what would become Dayton when he purchased land from the Shawnee Indians after they had surrendered their lands to General George Washington during his Expedition against Native Americans at Fallen Timbers Creek near present-day Springfield Township. The initial development around Covington's store failed because there were no water supplies or other settlements available to support such a large community. However, over time various efforts were made to find a suitable location for a permanent town: These included surveys by Captain James Kapp with his surveyor's dividers; construction of a canal across the Scioto River by Colonel John Adams; and purchase from Nicholas Lorimer of 375 acres (190 ha) alongwooded creek eastward from downtown Dayton in 1807 for $5 per acre ($40/ha). Dayton rose rapidly to prominence as an important commercial center during the early 19th century due to its location on two major connecting routes - one leading westward into Kentucky coal mines while another led northeast into Illinois shoe factories and farm production areas. By 1800, it had become home to more than 500 people and had developed a prosperous textile industry that produced everything from overalls and coats to hats and shoes including lead pencils until 1850 when strikes ended productionring imported Chinese pencils which were replacing native American timber products exports . In 1814–1815., Dayton hosted both the First International Congress on Geology ( attended by representatives from 25 countries )and also served as site for three days during Daniel Boone's exploration journey across North America starting at Council Bluffs Iowa .In 1827–1828,, society poet Catharine Beecher moved her family into what would be their final home – she named it Mount Holyoke – near modern day Union City ,Ohio After spending several years living among Indian tribes living east of Lakes Erie & Ontario she proposed naming her new settlement after Mount Holyoke rather then anything else because 'it seemed like enough good things without any bad'. She met with local leaders but no one liked idea so she changed it back to Dayton upon moving out . Mt Holyoke remained our final name until 1919 when we reverted backto Dayton
