There has been a military deployment present in Dayton, Ohio since the Revolutionary War. The first military deployment was during the skirmish at Fallen Timbers in 1794. A detachment of 100 men from the Third Regiment of Dragoons were sent to help with the militia effort against Native Americans. They arrived on October 13th and fought for three days, suffering no casualties. The Second Seminole War began on May 2nd 1835 and lasted for nearly two years. William Tecumseh Sherman's march through Central Ohio into Alabama led to the Battle of Gaines' Mill on July 4th that resulted in 5 dead and 30 wounded soldiers from Ohio’s 3rd Infantry Regiment being taken prisoner along with General Winfield Scott’s army. This event is still considered one of the largest engagements in American history. On November 7th 1917, Dayton residents participated in World War I when they mobilized to support America’s allies by purchasing food and gasoline for planes used in France. On December 12th 1941, President Franklin D Roosevelt ordered U-2 aerial reconnaissance flights over Japan which revealed Japanese forces had built a airbase near Midway Island. The United States responded by launching an attack on Japan known as the Pearl Harbor Attack that resulted in more than 60,000 casualties including 616 service members from Dayton who lost their lives serving their country during this time period

That same year, the first public school opened in what is now First Avenue South Elementary School and today that school serves as both an elementary school and amiddle/high school for students in grades six through twelve who attend other schools within Hamilton County or nearby suburbs. In 1830, John Smeaton built his first sawmill on State Street in what is now part of Downtown Dayton and soon after began producing logs that were dragged downriver by oxen to be stacked high near where he currently stands near Third Street and Seventh Avenue S
