Dayton, Ohio is home to the first coffee roasting facility in the United States. The first coffee roasters in Dayton were Charles Fenton and his partner John Day. In 1892, Fenton opened a small grocery store near the University of Dayton with his two friends, James McNaught and George Wessels. They roasted coffee beans on their premises until 1902 when they opened a larger roasting and selling business at 611 Main Street. In 1923, Dayton's first Italian restaurant, La Scala, started serving espresso from an old French press. At that time, Columbus was the leading center for coffee beans production in America and Dayton was just starting to emerge as a city with its own café culture. The Roastery at 601 Main Street closed in 1974 but it remains one of the most iconic buildings in Dayton thanks to its Moderne architecture and well-preserved furnishings. From 1975-2001, Roastery Coffee operated out of what is now The National Bank building located at 4th & Elm Streets which also served as their roast shop for many years before being sold to Peet's Coffee Company in 2001. Today, Peet's still operates out of The National Bank building as their roast shop while their cafés continue to serve traditional Columbian espresso drinks such as lungo (a long slow shot), cortado (a medium-sized single shot), macchiato (a cafe latte) and cappuccino (an over-the-counterItalian drink).

In the 1840s, Dayton became an important manufacturing center because of its location on the Great Lakes. It also became known for its coffee products. In 1865, Dayton was made the capital of Ohio and it remained that way until 1907. During that time, it hosted several political meetings and other important events.
Dayton, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio. The population was 13,853 at the 2010 census. Dayton is the county seat of Clark County and home to the University of Dayton and other large universities. It is also known for its brands--Cleveland Browns (now the Cleveland Indians), Dayton Automotive Museum, and Dayton's Festival of Music & Art--and its many downtown buildings including The State Fairgrounds and First National Bank Tower. The area that now forms Dayton was first populated by Huron people in 1795. In 1801, it became part of what would become Michigan Territory when that territory was organized from parts of Pennsylvania and Indiana. On July 4, 1827, due to his efforts as United States Secretary at War under President James K. Polk – including helping to create the Northwest Territory – George Washington was honored with a day-long visit by Governor Samuel Dickson of Ohio on July 5th in what would be called "Washington's Birthday." That same year, after becoming an independent country, Ohio awarded smallpox vaccination certificates to all male citizens over 21 years old on October 15th as part of a national campaign led by Drs. John Andrew Conklin and Isaac Watts; this so-called "Dayton Vaccination Act" helped reduce fatalities from smallpox during that era.) In February 1800, Robert Eppinghaus set up shop as a blacksmith in what would become Downtown Dayton - one block away from where he had started out 10 years earlier! By 1814-15, Eppinghaus had built himself a two story frame house near Third Street/Broadway (then Mohawk Avenue) - which still stands today - serving as both his workshop and home until his death in 1847 at age 86 years old! A few blocks south off Third Street/Broadway on High Street (then Delaware Avenue) were business premises belonging to Anthony Wayne’s Brewery starting around 1830 before becoming home to several residences over time including Elizabeth Hardeman’s House which she occupied beginning around 1840 before moving back into her brewery property eventually becoming part of Newark Baptist Church across the street from it starting about 1860 until its destruction circa 1910). One block east along High Street later located at Vineyard Road (then Arbor Place) were residence properties owned by Nicholas Wittman prior to their purchase by David Noyes who operated them until they were sold again circa 1880; these properties are included within today’s core redevelopment district known as “Emmons Park” located adjacent to First National Bank Stadium.) In January 1800 – less than three months after settlers arrived in what would become Dayton Township via boat anchored offshore near modern day Portsmouth – surveyors named Stephen Condon began surveys for land grants covering much present day Clark County Lots 1-3 & 6 sides thereof lyingnorthwest cornerof lot 3 northeast cornerof lot 2 northwest cornerof lot 1 extending thenceto point southeastwardly 8 rods or thereabouts being surveyedfor 300 acres or more containing apprximate water depth therein having been entire Surveyed For By Mr….& Wagoner…. Fresh roasted coffee is a long and arduous process that takes place over a period of weeks. The coffee beans are roasted in small batches and then stored for the next few months. Once the beans have had time to dry, they are moved to an oven and roasted until their color changes from black to a light brown or even red. The first coffee was brewed by early human beings around 12,000 years ago. It is thought that these early brewers used green coffee beans which were picked fresh from the trees. The man-made bean became available about 2400 BC when Sumerians discovered Java. Coffee was first brewed in Arabia about 1000 AD and Egyptians began to drink it in 600 BC. Coffee started being exported to Europe in the 14th century AD and it was introduced into America during the 16th century AD by Portuguese sailors. Indian traders also brought coffee back to Asia during this time period. The Dutch started brewing coffee in 1795 and soon after, Frenchmen followed suit. In 1825, American Governor John Quincy Adams authorized the planting of coffee beans on Long Island in New York State as part of his efforts to promote agricultural production throughout New England. By 1830, more than one million pounds of coffee were being produced annually on Long Island alone! During World War II, Ethiopia became Roosevelt’s primary source of supply forground Arabica coffees because their own plantations had been destroyed by warring factions within their government

The city was founded by James B. Mooney in 1824 as a small trading post on the Scioto River. Dayton's growth followed a path similar to other early American cities such as Cincinnati and Philadelphia, which grew from tiny settlements into major commercial centers. In 1851, Dayton became an incorporated city and began its long journey towards becoming a nationally Recognized City. It took many years but Dayton reached its current state-of-the-art status as a technology center and cultural destination. Today, Dayton remains one of America's most vibrant cities with an active downtown community that includes several world-famous museums including The Museum of Art, The Science Museum of Ohio (formerly known as The University of Toledo), and The Franklin Institute (founded in 1795). Dayton's history is full of milestones both big and small that have helped make it one of America’s most vibrant cities today. In 1824, when James B. Mooney founded what would become Dayton, he knew there was much work to be done for his new town after decades of pioneers pushing through difficult terrain in search for new land grants opportunities in what is now eastern Ohio. For Mooney, this land purchase was only the beginning – he soon realized that this area would be crucial for creating a viable town because it lay just across the Scioto River from where he himself worked ranching operations near present day Cleveland. So important were these jurisdictional boundaries that another pioneer named George Stephenson made sure everything stayed calm about building his “ giant railroad bridge” over the river so industry could move freely between these two growing towns! This key engineering feat helped establish Dayton as not just yet another upstart Utopian community – but also as one of North America’s leading transportation hubs thanks to railroads flooding traffic off Highway 22 every way possible! And while some might say that this type of progress has led some people heretofore see things too favorably – I firmly believe that our city’s rich history makes us all appreciate how far we have come!
