When the Dayton Coast Guard was founded in 1881, it was a small organization. However, over time, the Coast Guard has grown and become one of Dayton's most important institutions. The Coast Guard is responsible for the safety of the community and its residents by providing law enforcement, maritime security and emergency services. In addition to its duties as a police service, the Coast Guard also provides supplies and services to local communities through its Emergency Operations Center (EOC). The EOC is located on Congress Street in downtown Dayton. It was built in 1974 as part of an effort to improve communication between the Coast Guard and local agencies. The $3 million project was funded by a grant from the National Endowment for Democracy. The EOC is used to provide information about emergencies such as hurricanes or floods; handle requests for assistance from local governments; distribute communications equipment; provide training; and conduct other activities related to public safety. The Dayton Coast Guard has been involved in many campaigns throughout its history. For example, during World War II, the coast guard helped draft laws that gave citizens rights when it came to fishing grounds off of our shores. Additionally, during Operation Neptune's Spear (the war with Iraq), members of the coast guard played an important role in saving lives by stopping Iraqi vessels from entering Udayan Bay. Finally, during Christmas season this year, members of the coast guard participated in a "Wrap-Up" party for troops stationed at Fort Hood Texas which included food donations from area businesses Specialty Store Inc., Radio Shack Nextel Wireless Corp., Jiffy Lube & Supply Co., etcetera

Dayton is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Montgomery County. The population was 116,405 at the 2010 census, making it the 8th-largest city in Ohio and the second-largest city in Greater Cincinnati behind Cincinnati. Dayton is located on the southern edge of downtown Cleveland, just east of University Circle and west of Fifth Avenue. It lies within Muskegon Heights Township, part of Cleveland Township. The first permanent settlers in what is now Dayton were Native Americans who called them "the Delaware Nation". In 1795, British General George Washington established Fort Cumberland and began construction on what would become Madison Square Garden in present day downtown Dayton. The settlement was abandoned for many years, but resumed growth under James Kildare as a military garrison for northern Ohio during 1813–1814 when American forces fought Tecumseh's Indian War against Shawnee leader Tenskwatawa. As white settlement increased in Northwest Ohio during the 1820s, Dayton emerged as an important transportation hub with its own canal system connecting Lake Erie to nearby cities such as Toledo and Cleveland. The area around present day downtown Dayton was laid out by John Clough in 1825; he named it Waterloo after his home town near Waterloo, England which had been spared destruction by fire following Napoleon's march through Britain that year. In 1834, James Kildare founded The Daily Courier (now The Cuyahoga Chronicle) as a morning paper based at First Congregational Church on Main Street; it served as the nucleus for later newspapers such as The Dayton Daily News (1902), The Dispatch (1912), and Journal Star (1963). In 1850, Kildare built another paper building – this time into a crude brick structure known today as Gadsden Capitol Building – which served as both office buildings for government officials including judges and legislators before being razed to make way for First Union Bank Tower in 1907; this tower still stands today as one of Downtown Dayton's most visible landmarks. In 1870–71, David Silliman erected Aitken & Washburn’s Blockhaus on High Street; this blockhaus is considered to be one of America’s earliest skyscrapers because it featured domes more typical of European architecture than those found previously throughout North America."During World War II," due to strategic bombing raids by Allied bombers over occupied Europe during 1944–1945 (), mass production of munitions began at Parma Workshops inside First Union Bank Tower "and soon thereafter [Dayton] became world famous among manufacturers for its quality munitions products." After 1945 ended hostilities in Europe however local manufacturing stopped abruptly along with many other eastern United States jobs due to import tariffs implemented by newly elected president Franklin D Roosevelt following World War II." This abrupt end to industrial production also impacted much rural areas across eastern Tennessee especially since many skilled workers had already left during wartime while others found new careers working abroad or returned home too young to continue working after war Ended" During post-war decades businesses generally reverted back into pre-war levels with few exceptions: "One exception was Sheet Metal Workers Local 227 which continued operations until 1978 despite having no Locals left active after 1945"] However certain segments outside traditional manufacturing have continued thriving – such as healthcare services – thanks largely to immigration from Mexico and Central America" .
