Dayton, Ohio is a city in the southeastern corner of Ohio. The population was 46,607 at the 2010 census. Dayton is part of the Dayton-Middletown-Wilmington Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now embraced by Dayton was first settled by Elamites, who were followed by the Timucua and other tribes after they moved from Florida to this area during the final phase of the Miami-Illinois War (1812-14). In 1837, when James K. Polk became President of the United States, he decided to move westward through what is now Kentucky and Tennessee in order to gain territory for the Union. He selected Dayton as one of his administrative centers and waived all federal building permits in order to make it easy for settlers to come here. By 1840, when Andrew Johnson became president and General Ulysses S. Grant took office as military governor of Reconstruction South Carolina, Dayton had become an important center for trade with eastern Kentucky and northern Indiana. In 1868 Congress passed an act authorizing a permanent home for American Indians on Richland Creek near present day Wrightstown in Montgomery County; this resulted in a group of Indian traders coming here from Minnesota led by Chief Watkin's band beginning operations in 1870 under leadership of Colonel George Catlin (1797-1875). A small town sprang up around these early traders' settlement which grew into Dayton over time becoming known as "The Village." This name may have been taken from nearby Mount Airy which had been named after Giles Wright (1684-1753), an Englishman who founded Cincinnati, Ohio on Canandaigua Lake according to contemporary accounts. In 1881 plans were made to build a dam across Richland Creek which would impact negatively on many small communities upstream - particularly those located along Myles Creek - so citizens leading uprisings successfully forced American Indian abandonment of their villages downstream beginning on October 17 that year following assurances given by then Governor John Mahon that any such dam would not be built without local consent; accordingly nodam construction commenced until much later due largely to economic factors brought about by increased floods resulting from heavy rains caused by storms related to Hurricane Floyd ravaging central Ohio during late summer/early fall1987 Orange County voters also successfully approved $15 million bond issue for flood relief purposes prior to November 3rd 1987 when Floyd hit hardest causing extensive damage including loss/lossof life within tornado outbreak touching most parts east Tennessee & Ironton County resulting in EF5 tornado devastation destroyed or damaged homes & Businesses totals reached $191 million This story has been told before but never fully researched or documented so I feel its worth writing about again global warming induced severe weather events causing displacement millions people properties destroyed infrastructure washed away losses totaling over 1 trillion dollars since 1969 ----- It should be noted that while some native Americans did chooseto live among Europeans after Removal began effortsB C fewer than 10% actually did so - primarily because they found living amongst Whites more comfortable than being Native under difficult working conditions under harsh circumstances ----- Today's population growth comes mostly from commuters working within downtowns such as Columbus or Cincinnati who are commuting into larger cities outside Greater Dayton; however there are also sizable numbers residing throughout suburban areas adjacent both east and west sides of town including Russell Township off Interstate 75 north towards Springfield Heights; Beavercreek Township between Butler Hills Avenue and Beavercreek Waterfront Parkway just south of Bellefontaine Road; Newburgh Heights east off Interstate 70 northwest towards Newburgh University Hospital; Springboro Township just south of Mound City Road inside Lebanon Valley Regional Park boundaries

Dayton, Ohio is a city in the state of Ohio, United States. The population was 61,695 at the 2010 census. Dayton is also the county seat of Montgomery County. Dayton is located on the east bank of the Scioto River and is bordered by Beavercreek to the north and west, Clinton Township to the south and east, and Medina County to the south-southwest. The first non-native people arriving in what is now Dayton were Shawnee Indians who founded a village on Big Creek in 1795. In 1803, General Anthony Wayne's army passed through central Ohio during its campaign against Native Americans known as "The Great Indian War". General Wayne's encampment included a storehouse and mill on Little Miami River near present day Dayton. This event helped give Dayton its nickname "The Birthplace of American Democracy." In 1836, John Murray built a wharf on Sandy Hook Lake which became downtown Dayton after he bought land from an Indian named George Stephenson for $1 million dollars. Downtown Dayton was designed by James Aiken with elements of Gothic Revival architecture which resembles that found in European cities such as Paris and Vienna at this time. In 1845–1846, Abraham Lincoln was running for president on a platform that called for Missouri Compromise (a bill proposing slavery be allowed within Indiana while still allowing it throughout most of Illinois). On February 11th in nearby Springfield, Illinois (then part of Kentucky), Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth while eating dinner at A&P Market in Maryland Heights (now McCourtney Park). As news spread about Lincoln's assassination, crowds began to gather around Pemberton Street where he had been shot; many believed that Booth had assassinated him because he would not allow passage of his proposed Kansas–Nebraska Act which would have ended slavery along US borders
Dayton was founded on April 12, 1795 by James Dayton and his family. The city was named for George Washington who had visited the area in 1793. The city became a major center for transportation and manufacturing after the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825. In 1907, Dayton donated land to make way for the new University of Dayton. The university opened its doors in 1909 and has since become one of the leading universities in Ohio.
