The Dayton, Ohio Army National Guard's gift history goes back to World War I. In 1917, the Dayton Gendarmerie was organized and raised in response to a call for military volunteers. The first detachment of five officers and fifty men met at the Harmondsworth Arsenal on October 3, 1917. The unit was trained under the direction of Colonel John D. Rockefeller Sr., who served as Commandant of the Dayton Gendarmerie from 1918-1920. From 1920-1927, Colonel Rockefeller served as commander of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 9th Infantry Regiment (Ohio Volunteer Infantry). While commanding this regiment, he donated many items including a trench mortar and ammunition bag to the national guard armory in 1918. During World War II, Colonel Rockefeller also donated an M4 Sherman tank to the army for use by the 1st Armored Division. AfterWorld War II ended, Colonel Rockefeller returned his donation to the army in 1946.Over time, many members of both branches of our Armed Forces have added their names tothe Dayton Gendarmerie's gift history. Some notable donors include Lieutenant General George Custer (1863-1947), Admiral Chester Nimitz (1908-1982), Vice President Al Gore (1993-2000), Governor Neil Patrick Harris (2002-) and Dr. James Dobson (born December 15th 1927). Today,the Dayton Gendarmerie continues its tradition of giving back through donations and outreach programs that support community organizations throughout Northwest Ohio."
