In the early 1800s, Dayton was a small town and army garrison. The first military installation in what is now Dayton was at Fort Donelson, which was built in 1807. In 1814, the fortifications were moved to Fort Mifflin and it became an infantry regiment stationed there until 1861. The 12th Ohio Infantry Regiment fought in the Civil War as part of the Union Army. It was mustered into service on October 14, 1861 and served until April 1865. During its time in the Union Army, the regiment lost 22 men killed or mortally wounded, plus another 5 officers and 111 enlisted men who died of disease or other causes. After the war ended, the 12th Ohio Infantry Regiment disbanded on May 26, 1865. It is today considered one of Dayton’s most famous military units because of its role during the Civil War.

Dayton, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Hamilton County. As of the 2010 census, Dayton had a population of 66,719. The American Civil War began in 1861 when Confederate sympathizers attacked a Union military parade in downtown Dayton before being repelled by Federal troops led by Major General William Treadwell; this event symbolized continuing violence between Northern and Southern factions throughout much of America following the start of war. On November 11–12 1865, General Nathan Bedford Forrest's Confederate cavalry attacked a Union column near Lebanon Junction; this attack led to one officer killed and three captured including Captain James Wofford who later served as governor of Indiana Territory until 1872 when he resigned due to anti-Southern bias within his own government The end result was that most African Americans serving in Union armies were either killed or captured while many white men did not experience combat until well into Reconstruction era (1870s). It's the second-largest city in Greater Cleveland after Cleveland and is part of the Dayton–Canton–Springfield metropolitan area. Dayton is located on New York State Route 7, just east of I-71 and I-475 from Columbus, Ohio. The first settlement in what is now Dayton happened in 1795 when Captain John Stonington established a trading post on George Washington's line of march from Philadelphia to Canton (now Akron). The surveyor for Greene County named David Dennison surveyed and laid out streets and townships in 1798 for Richard Stockbridge, one of General Washington's primary aides during his military campaigns against Native Americans along the Great Lakes region during the Northwest Indian War (1789-1793). On July 6, 1800, by order of President Thomas Jefferson, Dennison named this community "Dayton". The town was chartered as a village on December 12th 1807 by James McMillan with 1,500 people living there at that time. It became an independent municipality on March 16th 1828 when it joined Athens Township which had been created two years earlier through an act of the General Assembly.
