The Cleveland Navy Yard was founded in 1814 as the first navyyard in the United States. The yard served as a military and naval base for many years and it also produced warships, submarines, and other naval equipment. In 1915, the Cleveland Navy Yard was turned over to the city of Cleveland and it became the main shipbuilding center in Ohio. The city Poor House also served as a shipyard annex from 1917 until its closure in 1963. In 1915, Euclid Avenue became Third Street when it was renamed after local industrialist Augustus Pinchot Sr.. The name change may have been due to suggestions by Clevelander Mayor John Denny that Third Street should become east-west commercial artery like Fifth Avenue or Park Drive in New York City due to its location near Progressive Field baseball stadium across Euclid Ave., Symphony Hall and other important buildings on/near Third Street between Madison and Wayne Avenues.. In 1925, WJW radio station changed its call sign to CKXU (then WWJZ) which would be their current call letters until 1978 when they changed them back to WWJZ effective February 1st 1979
The Cuyahoga Falls area was first settled by the Potawatomi Indians in the 17th century. The first European to visit the area was Captain John Smith in 1607. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson traveled through this region and named it for the falls of Cuyahoga River which he saw on his way from New York to Ohio. The community that developed around the falls began as traders and farmers settlements until 1825 when a local horse-drawn canal was built connecting Cincinnati with Cleveland. By 1830, however, development had stalled due to competition from railroads and canal construction stopped completely in 1835. With transportation becoming increasingly important, agriculture became more prevalent in the area beginning in the 1840s and continued to grow until World War II when industrialization led to a decline in population growth. After 1945, Cuyahoga Falls experienced a period of increased redevelopment which has included new hotels, restaurants and other businesses.
