In 1795, as part of a land deal with Nicholas Biddle (), Cuyahoga County was formed from what was then Lucas County; it included part of present-day Pittsburgh Township and all but two miles (3 km) of present-day Cleveland's eastern border with Lake Erie
Cuyahoga Falls was founded by the Potawatomi people in 1795. The falls were first mentioned in 1593 when the French explorer Jacques Marquette explored the area. In 1800, Cuyahoga County was created from parts of Lorain and Medina counties. The first mayor of Cuyahoga Falls was John A. Hanna, who served from 1855 to 1861. In 1865, Cleveland became a city and Cuyahaga Falls became its municipal center. The original waterbed for the falls was located near present-day Garfield Heights and it took many years for engineers to find a way to diverted the streamflow so that the falls would be more efficient at producing water for human consumption. In 1927, construction began on what is now known as Lake Erie Boulevard which led to increased traffic and congestion on I-90 between Cleveland and Buffalo. In 1961, following completion of Interstate Highway 95 between Cleveland and Buffalo, development along Lake Erie Boulevard ceased as traffic shifted to other routes
