The village was founded in 1814 by fur traders who named it after the Canadian River which flows through their settlement. By 1870, when Cuyahoga Falls became an incorporated municipality, its population hadgrown to more than 10,000 people. In 1907, as part of larger efforts to urbanize eastern Ohio, Cuyahoga Falls annexed neighboring unincorporated communities of Mentor and Uniontown Heights. In 1921–22 voters approved plans for an electric power plant on the river's edge that would have generated electricity for residential use and world trade; however these plans failed to receive funding from public officials until 1933 when President Franklin D. Roosevelt approved them with his New Deal program as part of his overall effort to revive American industry during the Great Depression. The plant was built over a period of several years starting in 1937 and began operating in 1939; it ceased operations in 1976 following enhanced safety measures that were put into place after two major accidents at nearby General Electric plants).
