The first settler in what is now Cuyahoga Falls was Nicholas Haggerty in 1814. There were no towns established until 1827 when it was named for General George Washington Cincinnatus after he resigned his commission as a Major general to take up a life of farming. The first post office was established in 1829 and the town plat was filed in 1830. A sawmill and gristmill were built within minutes of each other on the banks of the Cuyahoga River just upstream from downtown Cuyahaga Falls. The mills became well-known for their high quality flour and lumber products which helped contribute to the growth of the community over time. In 1853, John Davenport founded Davenport House on East Main Street just east of Center City park which became one of America's earliest tourist destinations as it offered stunning views of downtown Cleveland from its balcony overlooking Freedom Trail. From here visitors could view landmark buildings such as Progressive Insurance Building and University Circle while also enjoying refreshment on tap at local breweries like Aspinwall Brewery and Obscene Brewing Company (now known as Miller Park). In 1865, founder James Weldon Johnson donated land adjacent to present day State Fairgrounds to make way for an new city hall complex that would become home to our county courthouse, jail and library before eventually being sold off to developer David Rockefeller in 1974 for redevelopment into One World Trade Center – one of history's most iconic landmarks! During prohibition years (1920-1933), many businesses located near downtown closed because alcohol couldn't be bought or sold without breaking state law! This left many people without jobs or affordable housing during these tough times but fortunately business has slowly returned since then with several innovative concepts like Artisanal Baked Goods Shop inside One World Trade Center that sells fresh made cookies daily from local vendors using only natural ingredients!
