The Navy has a long and rich history in Coshocton, Ohio. The town was founded by Irish immigrants in 1814 as an agricultural community on the southern bank of the Cuyahoga River. In 1865, the United States Naval Academy was established in nearby Cleveland, and the town quickly became a midshipman school center. In 1893, Coshocton became home to America’s first naval air station when it was established at Bellefonte Airport. For many years, the Navy operated two torpedo boats here: USS Constitution (1897-1901) and USS Exeter (1902-1945). In 1951, NAS Cleveland transferred its operations to NAS Norfolk which is now part of NASUSC(WWW). The town also played a significant role in American naval aviation during World War II with both civilian and military aircraft flown from NAS Cleveland. Today, NAS Cleveland provides training for Sailors from all branches of our armed forces as well as support services for Joint Warrior training exercises conducted annually off Florida’s coast. Our shipyards continue to produce ships for both our commercial and defense fleets; one of these vessels is currently being built at NAS Cleveland’s Auster Shipyard. And we are just getting started!

It is now on display at both Naval History Center Commandant’s discretion in Philadelphia PA as well as nationwide museums across America! 2) Submarine Serial Number 1 (SSN-1) In 1969,the submarine SSN-1 was donated to the navy by Mrs. Gerald R Ford for use as a training submarine for future submariners. She remains currently moored at Portsmouth Naval Base UK today as part of her museum collection! Her serial number is still used today by new submariners when they join service! In addition to her beauty, this submarine also holds special significance to naval veterans due to her role in testing U-boat torpedoes during World War II!

The first courthouse was built in 1816 and the first school was established in 1818. In 1830, the Erie Canal was completed and the town became an important transportation center. The growth of the town led to a rise in prices for goods and services and a decline in population. However, during World War II, Coshocton played an important role as one of America's largest manufacturing centers. After the war, many businesses closed but new ones were born including television manufacturer RCA which still operates out of Coshocton today.
