The Coshocton National Guard was organized on December 16, 1907. The unit was first called the "Ohio National Guard" and it served until 1917. In 1917, the national guard unit became the "Coshocton Volunteer Infantry" and it served in World War I. After World War I, the Coshocton Volunteers disbanded in 1921. The Coshocton National Guard was reactivated on July 1, 1927 as a part of the United States Army Reserve. It remained inactive for a few years before being re-activated on September 25, 1931 as part of the Ohio Army National Guard. The Coshocton National Guard has been stationed in various locations in Ohio since its inception including Hamilton County and Stark County.
Coshocton is a village in Defiance County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,848 at the 2010 census. It lies along the Coshocton River and is part of the Akron–Canton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Village of Coshocton was organized on December 12, 1827 as a result of an act of the General Assembly of Ohio. On November 17, 1837, it became a town. In 1868 it became a city. The current name for Coshocton was given to the village by its trustees on July 15, 1907 after they adopted the motto "From Our Hearts To Yours". The first settler in what is now Coshocton Township was James Sprague in 1800. He built his home on the present site of Parkersburg Landing on what is now State Route 30 just east of modern-day New Albany. Sprague's land included much that is still within today's boundaries of Coshocton Township and Defiance County: most notably sections of York Road and State Route 3 (now US Route 20), both leading into Akron from north and west respectively; and parts of present-day Hilliard Avenue (SR 4) between High School Road on the east side and Scenic Drive across Elmira Lake on the west side near Interstate 84/US routes 422/422A (just south of where I-84 meets SR 4). The Continental Army, which was made up of Soldiers from around the nation, needed artillery and other supplies to fight against British troops. So Congress set up a national guard to provide these supplies and support the army. From its inception in 1792 until 1861, the National Guard was part of the U.S. Army. However, it did not have full powers until 1882 when President Chester A. Arthur signed an act giving it broad authority over all aspects of military operations within the United States (except for militia). The National Guard also assumed responsibility for certain tasks not currently carried out by the U.S. Army or Navy such as providing security at major events or guarding important infrastructure projects like bridges and canals. Since its creation, the National Guard has played an important role in American society both before and after 9/11/2001. In 2001, during Operation Neptune’s Spear, then-President George W Bush ordered 1 million Guardsmen to be sent to Afghanistan in order to bolster NATO forces there while they faced Taliban threats from bin Laden’s al Qaeda network (the first time Guardsmen had been called into action since World War II). This deployment helped solidify relationships between America and our allies and demonstrated how essential national guardsman are to our democracy and security system – something that has been reiterated many times since then (e.g., during Operation Neptune's Spear III in 2012). Additionally, in response to natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina; Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano directed 200 Guardsmen from Maine’s First Patriot Brigade (a unit made up of Reserve Forces) into New Orleans on August 29th 2005; later that year Florida Governor Charlie Crist put together a state guard force led by Colonel Tom Hall that responded quickly to help with relief efforts following Hurricane Manuel
