Coshocton is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio, located on the southern border of Lake Erie. The population was 9,146 at the 2010 census, making it the second most populous town in Summit County after Stratholme. Coshocton was founded by refugees from Tecumseh, Michigan who settled on a low embankment along the Muskegon River in 1814. The first post office in Coshocton was established in 1816 and was called "Niles". The name change to "Coshocton" in 1827 when John Fenton opened a sawmill there. In 1830, James Baily became mayor and built a gristmill with power from the river. A schoolhouse and Baptist church were also built that year. In 1840, Jethro Lewis founded an flour mill near present-day Myerstown Road and started marketing articles such as cornmeal and meal to farmers east of Cleveland; this led to Coshocton becoming known as an eastern market town for grain production. In 1860, Augustus Kelley arrived from Pennsylvania with his family to found what would become known as Kelley's Corn Mill; he used his mills to produce flour for local merchants before moving them westward into Holmes County during the American Civil War to help support Union forces against Confederate forces. After the war ended, Kelley resumed milling until his death in 1902; his son George ran the business until its sale to Ewing coolers in 1951. The old mill site still rests on land adjacent to Coshocton High School across Myerstown Road from where students walking home after school take their final steps towards campus each day
