Conneaut, Ohio is a town in the state of Ohio, United States. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Cincinnati–Daytona Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Conneaut comes from the Shawnee word "kon-a-waht", meaning "place where there are many hickory trees". The Shawnee were originally from what is now southern Indiana and eastern Michigan. They moved westward in 1812 and settled in present-day Conneaut Township on the Scioto River. The first settler in what is now Conneaut Township was John Cook. In 1819, Horace Greeley founded Erie Canal Company to transport goods between Toledo and Buffalo using the Scioto River as his main route. In 1824, Captain John Strother established a Methodist church in what is now downtown Conneaultowne; it remains one of Conneauts most important historical landmarks today. In 1827, George Stephenson built the first steam locomotive in America on the Great Lakes Railroad between Cleveland and Akron; he named it "Lake Erie" after his home state of New York. The townspeople renamed their new community "Connie" for him when they received word that he had made such an impressive achievement across North America. By 1830, Connie had a population of 350 people and was serving as a stop on stagecoach routes connecting Cincinnati with Pittsburgh and Detroit. However, by 1840 only about 50 people lived in Connie while its commerce handled just 6 passenger coaches per day traveling over graded roads through farmland aroundpresent-day downtown Conneaultowne On November 16th, 1907 an event occurred which has been cited as one of Americas largest industrial disasters when major floods destroyed entire factories along both sides of the Cuyahoga River near Cleveland resulting in loss of life (including many employees) and more than $15 million worth of damage to businesses including mills Conrad Flour & Feed Inc., American Can Co., Smiths Falls Glass Works Incorporated (later known as Allied Signal), Pabst Brewing Company, Weyerhaeuser Paper Products Co., Maytag Sewing Machine company among others In 1916 local boy Bob Hope started hosting nationally syndicated radio shows from his parents' house called simply "Bob Hope." This led to other locally based entertainers including Gene Kelly starting appearing on national television beginning with vaudeville comedian Joseph Wambaugh's shortlived show produced by NBC affiliates KTTV Tulsa (now KSDY) Oklahoma City (KSWO) Wichita (KSWE) following President Woodrow Wilson's call for programs designed to stimulate public interest during WWI

Conneaut is a city in and the county seat of Lucas County, Ohio, United States. The population was 513 at the 2010 census. The site of Conneaut was first settled by Europeans in 1796 as part of the Northwest Territory. The town was chartered on May 10, 1814 as a result of an act of the Ohio General Assembly. It became a village on July 1, 1825. The current name is derived from the nearby Conneaut River. In 1830, John Crampton donated land to make way for a public school and courthouse in what is now downtown Conneaut. In 1857, voters approved annexation by Cincinnati because it had become too difficult for villagers to get money from state coffers to keep their schools open. On February 25, 1912, Cincinnati annexed Conneaut as well with its own mill and other businesses within its limits; this made Conneaut one of only two cities in Greater Cincinnati that did not already have their own mill (the other being Dayton). On November 6, 1938 during World War II local residents successfully voted to join the military against Nazi Germany through secret ballot; this event is commonly considered to be when the city started its nickname "The City That Noted". After World War II ended in 1945 and muchof easternOhio became desolated by war-time destruction and poverty, many people returned home while others moved into new housing developments such as Stroudsburg development west of Cleveland which served as an inspiration for today's University Circle neighborhood near downtown Cleveland These changes led directly to the growth of downtown Cleveland which has seen more than 20 million visitors since 1990
The Conneaut, Ohio area was first populated by the Shawnee people in the late 1700s. In 1821, the United States acquired Conneaut from The Great Britain for $5,000. The area became part of the Northwest Territory of Ohio in 1824. On February 22, 1830, the territory was organized as a village under the name of Shaker Heights. On April 15, 1840, it was renamed to its present-day name of Conneaut after Captain John Conneaut who led an expedition against Native Americans on that same day in 1775.
