In 1825, a group of men from Conneaut, Ohio founded the first coffee house in the area. The coffee house was called the Coffee House and Graders. In 1829, the Coffee House moved to its current location on Main Street and started serving coffee with milk and sugar. The first shopkeeper at the new location was Mr. John Ladds. In 1830, a man named Nicholas Sigel opened a second coffee house in Conneaut with his brother-in-law Jacob Fritsch opposite of the Coffee House on Main Street. In 1832, an officer named Balthazar Sprague opened a third coffee house in Conneaut near Canal Street with his family as business partners. The establishment of these three businesses allowed for more people to get their hands on quality cup of java without having to travel far to find it. By 1840, there were six different cafes operating in town. In 1845, two brothers named Augustus and George Child opened another coffeehouse on First Avenue just east of Canal Street which became known as The Gilded Cage because it had alloys that sparkled like gold coins when viewed from above. By 1850, there were eleven different cafes operating in town with over one hundred employees working at them full time! By 1860, most of the businesses had closed down due to lack of profitability or competition from larger stores located closer by. However, one cafe still remained open on First Avenue - The Copper Kettle which continued serving up delicious cups of java until 1978 when it burned down!
Conneaut, Ohio is a small town located in the state of Ohio. The population was 7,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Middletown, OH-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Conneaut was James Cook who platted the town in 1795. In 1814, John Green settled in Conneaut and opened a store on Main Street. By 1830, there were 10 businesses operating in Conneaut. In 1836, George Stephenson founded the Cincinnati and Erie Railroad to transport goods from Cincinnati to Pittsburgh via Conneault (now Dunkirk). The railroad brought new life to Conneaut with more people and businesses coming to live and work here. Theodore Roosevelt came to visit Conneeault during his presidency in 1909. He called it "the most beautiful place I have ever seen." At that time, only 2 percent of the United States population lived within 100 miles of Dayton; but by 1911, this had increased to 20 percent due to development along the railroad corridor. On October 15th, 1957 as part of Celebrate America Week program local schoolchildren took part in an American flag salute from First Baptist Church down Main Street during National Anthem ceremonies preceding their school dismissal for lunchtime

In Conneaut, Ohio, the town was founded in 1814 by General James Wilkinson. The first post office was established in 1816. Conneaut became a town of the United States in 1840. The population of Conneaut grew to over 1,000 by 1860. In 1898, the city of Cleveland annexed Conneaut and it ceased to exist as an independent community within Cleveland until 1955. The history of the city of Conneaut begins with its founding on October 3, 1814 by General James Wilkinson. As part of the Northwest Territory organized under President Andrew Jackson, Wilkinson had surveyed a large area including present-day Conneaut and other villages in what is now Holmes County, Ohio for the government of what would become Northwest Territory. On October 3rd, 1814 Wilkinson submitted his survey to the Secretary at War for approval and received it on October 9th. On November 8th, 1814 Wilkinson met with representatives from various Indian tribes near present-day Portsmouth and made agreements which led to construction on April 17th of a road from Portsmouth eastward through Wexford Township (the township that included modern day Holmes County) to Greenville Township (now known as Findlay). This road became known as US 20 and is still traveled today by drivers heading east out of Cleveland towards Pittsburgh or west into Cincinnati. The townspeople were anxious to get started and quickly organized themselves into committees responsible for developing their new community. One committee elected three trustees who functioned as local officials such as street cleaning, building permits etcetera; another created a school board; while still others directed business activities such as getting goods brought into town from marketplaces or exporting goods produced in other towns in Northwest Territory. The cornerstone for what would become future downtown was laid on July 10th by Mayor John Witherspoon – one day after he had successfully lobbied Congress for $2 million dollars worth of land comprising much of what is now downtown Cleveland proper – adding insult to injury since most people thought their new home would be built just south of Main Street on Euclid Avenue across from Quicken Loans Arena! With rapid growth came problems including limited space and water resources plus high costs associated with expanding services like schools or providing infrastructure needed for larger populations like sewers or roads – all typical ingredients necessary for success when starting something big like this! However due largely to perseverance and hard work by pioneering citizens along with some great leadership examples such as Mayor Witherspoon (and later City Manager Al Lambert), things eventually got better over time thanks mainly to investment from businesses locating nearby including many banks which opened branches hereabouts during those early years! Downtown buildings currently include: United Bank Building (1836), State Bank Building (1840), First National Bank Building (1851-1901), Manufacturers Hanover Trust Company Building(1902), Fourth NationalBank Building(1920s) & JW Marriott Hotel - current structure completed in 2003! The act of Congress on February 14, 1814, creating the United States of America, included a provision for the purchase of lands east of the Mississippi River. On this day, President James K. Polk awarded land to Abraham Lincoln in what is now called Indian Territory. In 1836, settlers began moving into this area and founded the town of Conneaut on a small stream that flowed through their territory. In 1846, local officials petitioned Congress for statehood and when it was granted they named their new community after General Andrew Jackson. By 1870, Conneaut had a population of about 500 people and was incorporated as a city.
