Conneaut is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio, located in Holmes County. The population was 1,722 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Middletown, OH metropolitan area and is bordered to the north by Dayton, to the east by Ironton Township, and to the south by Lebanon Township. The name "Conneaut" comes from a Shawnee word meaning "a place where people gather during religious ceremonies." It was first settled in 1793 by couples from Pennsylvania and Delaware who were looking for land after their families lost their holdings in western Pennsylvania during the French and Indian War. They named their new community for John Contee (1684-1735), one of three sons of Nicholas Contee (1572-1641). In 1801, General David Hunter purchased 640 acres (2 km²) of land near Conneaut from James Fleming and moved his family there including his pregnant wife Anne (1724-1811), six children under five years old Samuel, John Jr., James Jr., Deborah Ann (1730-1813), Amos Hartsfield (1727-1800), Ebenezer Hartsfield (1734-1807) and Hannah Morehouse (1737-1814). The farm still stands today within Dayton's limits as Deer Park Farms Incorporated. In 1802, Henrico Cooley built a log cabin on what became known as Old Fort Hill which served as both a storehouse for goods brought into town by stagecoach drivers and also as a meeting place for local farmers and traders. This initial settler population included some men working off farms or ferrying goods across Lake Erie while others made their own homes using logs that they harvested from nearby woods or built themselves out of crushed limestone taken from quarries lining the Great Lakes region back then. The first school opened in 1803 when Daniel Boone Elementary School was erected on land donated by Reverend William Payne along with other donations towards creating an academy in what is now Mentor, Michigan though it closed before any students ever graduated due to financial difficulties experienced with building materials availability at that time! The first post office operated here between 1800s until it moved to Cleveland in 1892! In 1830 Union County was organized with parts of Holmes County following overwhelming popular vote results favoring annexation into Ohio Territory resulting in $1 million being appropriated towards its development! With this growth came increased competition for jobs & housing which led more than 50 businesses (& many homes) closure throughout downtown & surrounding areas around 1830 including many small shops/factories/libraries along 2nd Street North which still exists today albeit largely boarded up! At this time there were only 4 public schools operating within Holmes County & only 2 churches! By 1840 about 60% of all adults living here worked outside our community providing much needed economic stability not just for those inside but also those living closeby unable or unwilling to commute long distances each way! By 1860 most everyone had left except 10% who lived on Ft Pitt Island due to lack of space available elsewhere on site – an event that would ultimately result in its demolition over 80 years later leaving behind little evidence whatsoever aside from some scattered trees & cobblestone streetscape remnants primarily found near Ft Pitt Beach park currently used mostly as part ofshore sunbathing beach access!! Construction started earnestly on developing Ft Pitt Island beginning with residents volunteering labor surveyors marking off lots necessary mowing lawns fencing square yards planting gardens etcetera various essential tasks essential infrastructure such as water supply connection laying Trackways connecting different parts of island becoming completely operational 3 miles wide initially consisting entirelyof single story wood frame buildingslater enlargedenlargedto4story brick buildingsallocatedaround centralparklandwith numerous GablesAboveGroundWells thruout!!
