Columbus, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Hamilton County. The population was 793,524 as of 2010, making it the largest city in Hamilton County by population. It is also one of the most populous cities in the United States outside of New York City and Los Angeles. The name "Columbus" comes from Christopher Columbus, who discovered America on November 12, 1492 during his voyage across the Atlantic Ocean. The first European settlement in what is now Columbus was by French colonists on an island near present-day Portsmouth, Virginia; this colony was founded with help from Spain because France had landed interests in North America beyond its traditional lands along the Isthmus Of Panama. Unfortunately for him, this venture failed miserably due to lack of success or support from either side of the Atlantic Ocean.-Columbus was followed by other explorers such as Vasco Nunez de Balboa who reached same destinations as Columbus but did not establish any permanent settlements.-In 1607 Christopher Newport founded Jamestown Colony on Rhode Island Bay which became an important center for English colonization during this time period
