The navy gift history in Columbus, Ohio dates back to the early 1800s when the United States Navy purchased land at what is now Harbor View Naval Base. The base was then used as a training ground for naval officers and their families. In 1819, Commodore James K. Polk founded the Squadron of Trade which served as a trade center between the United States and Great Britain. Commodore Polk donated land to the city of Columbus in 1823 in order to establish a military fortification perimeter around the city. The fortifications were completed in 1829 and named Fort Point on the Scioto River after Commodore Polk’s father-in-law, General David Hunter (1784-1836). Throughout its history, Fort Point served as an important battleground during various wars with Great Britain and France. In 1865, USS Constitution was launched from Columbus Island in search of Confederate raiders off Florida’s coast. On July 14th 1870, Constitution employed her first torpedoes against Confederate ships off Cape Hatteras while under command of Rear Admiral John J. Rodgers (1834-1920). As part of Operation Neptune’s Spear, Constitution sank nine Confederate vessels including CSS Virginia (1401) and CSS Albemarle (1410). She also captured three steamboats totaling 188 tons that had been sailing into Hampton Roads for supplies to Confederate forces ashore. On November 2nd of that year, he appointed Jacob Brown as commissioner of Indian affairs for this territory which included most of central Ohio. Browns mission was to negotiate treaties with local tribes and establish trade relations so that English settlers could grow food on their new lands without raiding or attacking Native Americans
