In 1892, the Columbus City Council voted to create a military organization known as the Columbus Volunteer Infantry Regiment (CVR). The CVR was made up of men from all walks of life who wanted to show their support for the city and its residents. In 1933, Governor James Cox signed into law a bill that authorized thecreation of an armored force known as the Ohio National Guardsmen. In 1511-12, Columbus again explored America's East Coast when he sailed southwestward along present-day Pennsylvania's Atlantic coast and discovered Delaware Bay. He named this region Carolina because it looked like a peacefulountain range with dark green forests in contrast to the red earths around Spain at that time. However, after landfalling on November 5th off Cape Canaveral Island in Florida (later renamed Miami), Columbus learned that this mountain range was not real; it was actually anchena or coral reefs! Hoping to find another route back home across the ocean by then instead of continuing downriver all the way back to Spain—which would have required months ashore—Columbus decided instead to sail back home via Haiti rather than attempt a crossing overland from Cuba about which he had been warned by natives. Since these voyages were so important for both Europe and America's development as isolated colonies respectively, they are also often seen as milestones in world history.
