In the early 1500s, Columbus was a young man looking to find new land. He sailed his ship, the Niña, out into the Atlantic Ocean and discovered what would become known as America. After landing on this new continent, he explored it for many years before finally settling in what is now Ohio. During his time in America, Columbus made some valuable discoveries that helped spread Christianity and make this country one of the most powerful on Earth. One of these discoveries was a group of islands off of Ohio called Santa Clara (or Isla de la Santa Cruz). This island became known as Columbus' " landfall" because it was from here that he first saw evidence that there were other lands beyond Europe. The first European settlement in what is now Ohio happened in 1611 when English settlers founded the town of Portsmouth. Over time, other settlements also cropped up around Portsmouth- including Dublin (now Dayton), Lebanon (now Frankfort), and Chillicothe (currently Athens). By 1700, there were over 100 European settlers living in Ohio! Although colonization was initially motivated by trade reasons- such as getting goods from Asia back to Europe- later on it became more about establishing control over this newly discovered land. In 1795, England ceded all of North America to France after their victory in the French and Indian War; however, Spain continued to claim parts of North America until they lost possession to US forces during World War II! Afterward, much like Pennsylvania today, much of Ohio reverted back to its pre-war state with Native American reservations taking up large chunks of land!

It helped solidify English control over much of North America during the early 16th century; without it, there would have been no colonization process that led to democracy in America today!
