The Cleveland Naval Ship Museum has a rich navy history dating back to the early 1800s. The museum’s collection of naval artifacts, including ships and sailors, dates back to 1902 when the Navy Commodore in Cleveland, J.D. Walsh donated his ship storeroom and associated buildings to the city for use as the Naval Ship Museum. Over time, the Navy Commodore’s donation became an important part of the municipal government’s budget and was used by both the City Council and Mayor John Husted to provide funding for various civic projects. In 1949, when Cleveland City Hall burned down, Walsh contributed $5,000 towards reconstruction of the building. The Naval Ship Museum was opened in 1952 as a permanent facility with a gift from Admiral James Sweeny – Commander-in-Chief United States Fleet at that time – who donated four USS Constitution battlecruisers (Cleveland) and two USS Perry submarines (Cleveland). In 1957, when Seawolf decommissioned at Milford Haven Naval Base in Delaware after serving 21 years as America’s first nuclear-powered submarine, Cleveland received her as a gift from then–Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara. As part ofOperation Neptune Spear (the largest peacetime deployment of U.S Armed Forces intoCold War),Seawolf arrived in Cleveland on May 12th for final preparations before being sent home on July 22nd following her maiden voyage.
