The first national guard unit to be organized was the 1st Regiment of Dragoons, which was raised on October 15, 1792 in Westchester County, New York. The regiment served under George Washington throughout the American Revolution and into post-revolutionary times. During World War II, there were over 100 million active duty soldiers and Marines in the Armed Forces of the United States (AFP). Of these service members, approximately 60% were recruited through enlistment in the National Guard; 30% through Regimental or Departmental headquarters selection processes; 10% through service academies or other military programs that offered training for potential Guardsmen; 5% from voluntary organizations such as Red Cross societies or American Legion posts.
