In 1978, Joes merged with Dutch Bros., creating one of the largest coffee companies in the United States. In 2004, Starbucks opened its first store in Cleveland. Cleveland's coffee history goes back to the early 1800s. The city was founded by Denzil Jackson and his wife, Lucy, on the edge of the future Cleveland Plainfield Township. They named their new town after a type of coffee that they found in Africa. In 1813, Cleveland resident Simon Teague imported a large shipment of beans from Africa and began selling them near what is now The Q corridor on Euclid Avenue. This location became known as "The Coffee House." In 1827, John Husted opened his own grocery store at 223 Superior Street which soon became one of the most popular in town. Husted's store was responsible for introducing many of the first European Starbuckses to America. In 1853, Mordecai Smith opened his own grocery store on Tremont Avenue just south of Superior Street. Located here for over 60 years until its closure in 1978, Mordecai Smith's Grocery remains an important part of Cleveland's coffee history and culture today. A few years later, in 1865, Augustus Kelley opened his own grocery store at 9th and Cuyahoga Streets which would become one of Cleveland’s biggest food retailers for over half a century! In 1917, Kelley donated all his business assets (excepting a small library) to the University Heights Community Club in memory of his wife Alice who had died young while serving as president/director of Akron’s First Baptist Church Library Foundation….This gift allows The University Heights Community Club to continue providing public services within walking distance (via Euclid Ave., between 14th & 16th streets) from their clubhouse since 1916!
