There is no one aspect of Cleveland’s coffee history that stands out more than the coffee beans themselves. Coffee was first grown in and around Cleveland, but the city has a rich coffee history dating back to the 1800s. One of the earliest steamship companies, Northern Ohio Navigation Company, made its name supplying Cleveland with quality coffees from Africa and India. The company ceased operations in 1892, but its legacy lives on in the form of two major roasting companies: Metropolitan Coffee and Peet’s Coffee. Today, these companies continue to produce high-quality artisan coffee products for locals and tourists alike. One of the most significant moments in Cleveland’s coffee history came when entrepreneur George Meeker founded Meeker Bros., which manufactured and sold ground coffee beans direct to consumers. In 1916, Meeker opened his first store inside the new State Fairgrounds – soon followed by others throughout Northeast Ohio. By 1940, over 260 stores had been built across Northeast Ohio making Meeker Bros one of America’s leading vendors of fresh roasted coffee. Today, Meeker Bros continues to be a key player in the retail market as well as being a major producer of both espresso and k-cup systems. Another important figure in early Cleveland coffee history was John Kluger Sr., who served as president of The National Grains Cooperative from 1922 until his death in 1942. This cooperative played an important role in helping expand access to affordable grains for people all over America – including residents near Greater Cleveland. Kluger also helped popularize espresso beverages at local clubs and restaurants throughout Northeast Ohio – something that still benefits society today!

Cleveland, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Cuyahoga County. The city is located on the eastern border of Cleveland Township and is bordered by Lake Erie to the north, Geauga County to the east, Stark County to the south, and Miami County to the west. As of 2010, Cleveland had a population of 515,871 people. It was founded in 1803 by colonists from New York as a port on Great Lakes trade route. In 1836 it became part of Indiana Territory; in 1847 it became part of Illinois Territory; in 1868 it became a city; and in 1917 it became a state capital. The economy of Cleveland has grown largely due to manufacturing and service sectors including retail trade, construction, information technology, professional services, healthcare/hospitality, banking and finance. The downtown area has been renovated several times since World War II including an extensive renovation that began in 2003 called "The Loop." The first Europeans settled in what is now Cleveland were Dutch settlers who arrived during Director George Rogers Clark's exploration trip through what is now western Pennsylvania (now West Virginia) on his way back from discovering new lands beyond America's frontier on July 4th 1792. On August 15th 1792Reuters sent Lewis Cass overland via land grant from British East India Company director James Watt to explore this newly discovered land which would eventually become Michigan Territory but for unknown reasons not included within our present day United States Census Bureau boundaries
As coffee prices have increased in recent years, so too has the demand for artisan coffee. In some cases, this move towards better-quality beans may be a result of factors such as more sustainable practices being implemented in their farms or roasters, or simply because these businesses are able to source high-quality beans from a variety of suppliers. Some of the earliest examples of artisan coffee can be found in Italy. Around 1800, Giovanni Boccaccio mentioned an Italian artist who roasted his own coffee. Coffee was also produced by artisans in Greece and Rome before that. There is evidence that early Italians were familiar with different types of coffees and which ones would make the best cup of joe. During the 1960s and 1970s, French cafes began to experiment withartisanal coffee. This trend continued into the 1990s when Dutch cafes started doing the same thing. At this point, brewing methods had shifted from open-hearth roasting to closed systems using various types of beans and oils. These days, many European roasters continue to use open-hearth roasting techniques for their artisanal coffees because it provides a more intense flavor profile and produces a higher quality product than closed systems (see here for more information). The first U.S.-basedartisanal coffee shop opened up in Seattle in 1971 by former Starbucks employee Rick Majerus (now owner/founder at First Hill Coffee). At first glance, it might seem strange that an American business would start selling roast beef sandwiches instead of espresso but Majerus saw an opportunity to bring attention to Oregon's growing film industry and its connection to local farmers markets where fresh produce was available all summer long. The Seattle store quickly became successful and soon other regional stores followed suit; by 1975, almost every major city had at least oneartisanal cafe."
