The United States Air Force has a rich airforce history in Cleveland, Ohio. The city was home to the first U.S. military base in the country and is also known for its manufacturing and aviation industry. In 1941, the AAF's Second World War Headquarters moved from Langley AFB, Virginia to Cleveland, Ohio as part of General George C Marshall's plan to rebuild America after the devastation of World War II. The AAF station in Cleveland served as an important center for training pilots and engineers during the war years and helped fuel American aircraft production throughout the postwar years. After the end of World War II, Cleveland continued to serve as an important hub for USAF activity with its new headquarters being located at Case Western Reserve University from 1951 until 1997 when it moved to Wright-Patterson AFB near Dayton, Ohio. The post-war period saw a number of changes at Cleveland Air National Guard Base which became operational on 1 June 1946 under RAF designation No 72 (later No 261) Flying Training Wing flying cadets from Great Britain and Ireland through American units stationed there including No 404 Squadron RAF (No 2 Coldstream Guards) flown by Canadian students; these were followed by two RAF squadrons – Nos 601 (City of London) and 602 (Piccadilly Circus). These flying training squadrons were supplemented by NORAD fighter interception unit F-86 Sabres owned by USAAF which operated out of Grumman Aircraft Corporation facilities at Cleveland Municipal Airport adjacent to Case Western Reserve University. From 9 September 1949 these unit commands changed their names again – First Tactical Fighter Wing becoming Tactical Fighter Command USAF then Ninth Tactical Fighter Wing/Air Defense Sector Twelfth Air Division on 15 November 1949 when activated at Green Island AFB New York City following organisation offirst Tactical Fighter Wing/Air Defense Sector Ninth Air Division on 12 December 1948 while Third AF become wings/ sectors IFFW effective 1 January 1949 Cuban Missile Crisis ended hostilities between USA Inactivated on 14 October 1957: reactivated on 17 October 1957: reequipped with McDonnell Douglas F-4C Phantom IIs (F-4D would be initially used only as Trainer): 10 May 1960 - activation day wing replaced 3d Bombardment Group activated 8 November 1960 associate duty with 5th Bombardment Group Withdrawal began: 26 March 1969: last combat mission 22 April 1969 Cleveland Air National Guard Base closed effective 27 March 1969 due to budget cuts within USAF however some personnel were reassigned or transferred back into active duty Army Reserve Component until 21 May 1970 when closure was finally announced effective 7 June 1970 On 25 September 1990 Northrop Grumman Corporation opened its world largest commercial airline terminal complex at Terminal Tower I in downtown Cleveland Brownsville Heights serving both mainline United Airlines flights operated out of terminals 1 & 3 while international services were serviced out of Terminal 4 adjacent to John F Kennedy International Airport serving routes from Havana Cuba offshoot Miami Dominican Republic etc.. This airport would ultimately close in 2001 but portions have been redeveloped into luxury apartments

In 1914-1918 during World War I munitions workers marched off-site at Willow Run Arsenal into nearby Price Hill because they could not get unemployment benefits despite being employed there full-time throughout wartime as machinists and other skilled workers who had not seen benefits since before Pearl Harbor when production stopped because war prices went up sharply due to scarcity caused by American entry into war without bargain talks with Great Britain or France which had agreed to help us get their citizens out from under American control supply constrained them greatly
