It is bordered by Strongsville to the north and west, as well as Medina County on its southern border. The first Europeans to visit what is now Cleveland Heights were French traders who arrived in 1612-1613. In 1788, due to British occupation of much of continental America during the Seven Years' War, General George Washington's military forces burned down part of what is today downtown Cleveland while they occupied Detroit; this destroyed most evidence that European settlement had ever occurred in this area. The town sites that became Cleveland and Mentor were platted out by colonists from other parts of Ohio within a few years after their arrival hereabouts. The first post office was established in 1814 at what is now Park View Terrace. By 1830, there were over 50 buildings in all – housing about 25% of American Indians then living hereabouts as auxiliaries for white farmers – plus three churches and several schoolhouses meeting on land bought from Indians for £1 per acre (about $40 per square foot). In 1835–36 AGB Sayers & Son built an ironworks onsite with plans for blast furnaces that would have produced 20 metric tons/day (6 short tons/hour)of wrought iron at an initial cost of $2 million; however these works never started because lack of funds forced them to abandon their project before completion despite claims by management that “the market will bear†such an expense! Today’s visitors can walk or ride bikes around some older mills dating back to 1835 when work began on two small sawmills: Mayhew’s Mills (later renamed Donelson Mills) and Rice’s Mill #1 which still stands today adjacent to I-75 just outside Ofirah Park neighborhood; both mills produced lumber until 1935 when they ceased operations due primarily to concerns about wood pests being Jersey beetles which soon devastated tree crops throughout northeast Ohio including many prominent maples near where these mills once stood! It wasn't until 1850 when brick making started with construction beginning on Old Fort Hill brick factory; it quickly became one of largest brick manufacturers in America both inside and outside Greater Cleveland In 1855 Stroud Bros., builders & buyers since 1798 opened new facility across US mail route 666 from Cuyahoga Falls - built using local labor - becoming perhaps country's second largest bricksmith after Baltimore's Johns Hopkins University campus
