Cleveland Heights is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Cuyahoga County. The population was 96,521 at the 2010 census, making it the second most populous city in Cleveland after Cleveland–Akron metropolitan area. It is also one of the largest cities in Ohio by land area. The first permanent settler in what is now Cleveland Heights was Nicholas de Razám, who arrived on May 10, 1788 with his families from Holland via APPOMAC River Valley. He named his new settlement after himself, Cleveland – or New Amsterdam (New Netherland). The original village plat was filed on November 12, 1813 and approved by Commissioners Lucas and Brown. It consisted of twenty-eight lots measuring one-half mile square and numbered 1 to 22; all were divided into two blocks each. One block north of Broadway Street served as the town square until 1837 when it was moved to its current site south of Euclid Avenue between Wirtz Boulevard and State Street In 1836, John Greenleaf Whittier published "A thousand years ago" which called for an Americanized version of England's Hampstead Heath. Inspired by this article, local businessman George Atherton began acquiring land east of downtown Cleveland for a large park he planned to create—Atherton Park – which would eventually become international known as Recreation Land Park . In 1839 Atherton donated land west of Euclid Avenue for use as a public school district; this donation became part of Hoyt College's initial location along East 105th Street . named after him – Case Western Reserve University . Case being one hundred miles away made donations difficult so another college could be established nearby During World War II , millions dollars worthof munitions were stockpiled at Case Western Reserve University in Wilmette because Chicago had been bombed out while Detroit continued to be bombed during that time period On July 4th 1947 construction began on Riverview Stadium which would later become home ground for both the Cleveland Browns (1946), Cincinnati Bengals (2000) and now Los Angeles Rams football team
