Cleveland Heights is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio, with a population of over 190,000 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area and is located on both banks of the Cuyahoga River. The city was founded in 1814 by General David Crockett and named for Sir George Cleveland, 1st Baronet. The first permanent settler in what would become Cleveland Heights was John Clemmons, who arrived in 1797 from Rhode Island. He built a log cabin on the east bank of the river near what is now Union Station. The following year, Clemmons married Mary Henshaw and they started to raise crops and cattle on their farm until 1800 when they moved to their current location on land that had been donated by Captain John St Clair (1753-1828). In 1802, Cleveland became one of two counties in Ohio within the newly created United States; it was not until 1827 that it became an independent town under the jurisdiction of Akronshire Township. The Cleveland Heights neighborhood of Cleveland, Ohio is a historic district that was developed between 1892 and 1954. The district includes 424 contributing buildings, including 124 churches and 12 synagogues. It has a population of over 100,000 residents. The first settlers in the area were the Algonquian-speaking Mohawks who arrived in 1796. In 1812, John Cuyahoga County was formed from part of Lake Erie and the land along the Cuyahoga River was given to him by Congress. The first settler in what is now Cleveland Heights was Peterobalus Wright who built a cabin on the east side of present-day Euclid Avenue in 1814. A few years later, he sold his land to Nicholas Henshaw for $3 per acre ($40 total). In 1827, James Niles donated land to build a school in Cleveland Heights which became known as Niles School. The first African American to attend this school was Isaiah Thomas who attended from 1828 until 1830. In 1830, Ebenezer Baptist Church started services in the house on Euclid Avenue where Reverend Elijah Hicks preached for many years before moving to First Baptist Church on Avery Place in 1851. When Methodists moved into Cleveland Heights from outlying areas during the mid 1800s they established their own church at 106th Street and Caldwell Avenue which became known as First Presbyterian Church (later Trinity United Methodist Church). Aftermath of World War II led to an increase of black families moving into Cleveland Heights due to job opportunities available there after the war ended. By 1950, African Americans made up 20% of all households living within one mile (2 km) of downtown Cleveland while they constituted only 5% of all households within one mile (2 km) of downtown Akron. To keep white homes from becoming mixed with black lives throughout this time period multiple segregation laws were passed forbidding crossfire between different races within city limits without prior approval from state officials This prohibition led some homeowners to paint or cover their eaves with aluminum foil so that no one could see inside from outside; however it also resulted in increased crime rates because people could not be expected not to steal when looking out for potential thieves open windows
