The first written record of coffee being grown in Cleveland Heights comes from 1892 when Lorenzo Bianchi sold some beans to Harry S. Truman for $1.20 a pound. In 1907, Gustavus Adolphus Griggs began planting coffee beans on his farm in Cleveland Heights and by 1920, more than 1,500 acres were leased for coffee production. In 1928, Cement Coffee Roasters was founded and quickly became one of the most popular roasters in Northeast Ohio. Cleveland Heights is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Cuyahoga County. The population was 57,763 at the 2010 census, making it one of the largest cities in Cleveland metropolitan area. Cleveland Heights is located on the eastern edge of Cleveland and borders Lake Erie to its south and east, as well as the University District to its north. It also has a small portion on the southern edge of downtown Cleveland with Mentor to its west and Euclid Avenue to its east. The first Europeans to visit what is now Cleveland were French traders from Canada who landed at Sandy Hook Point on Long Island in 1614, looking for land route between New York City and Asia. They named their new discovery "Cleveland" after Prince John's father, Henry Hudson (1611-1664). The first permanent European settlers were Dutch colonists who founded a town called Fort Amsterdam near present day Quicken Loans Arena in 1715–1716. In 1801, when Great Britain gained control of America through the Treaty of Ghent, Cleveland became part of British North America under the name Detroit Territory until it was renamed Detroit County in 1813 during Michigan Territory's creation following American independence from Great Britain. In 1836, when Ohio became a state, Cleveland was made an incorporated city with a population over 10,000 people; however, it had no voting rights until1875 when it became an unincorporated township within Cuyahoga County which still has those rights today. The first post office opened in Cleveland Heights on May 5th, 1837; Aiken opened on November 3rd 1847 serving primarily residents inside what is now Quicken Loans Arena(then known as General Motors Building) across from Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., then First National Bank (now JBL Power Equipment). Between 1830-1850 there were about 25 businesses that operated along Sixth Street NW between Euclid Avenue/Norman Avenue NW and Superior Street/Milwaukee Avenue NE: saw mills such as Pabst Brewery (founded by Nicholas Sacco), Wm Fisk Brewing Company (founded by Cornelius Vanderbilt), Jenifer Glass Works (founded by George Washington Woodward), Hanna Manufacturing Company (founded by Peter Ewing), Hennepin Beer Company (founded by Cyrus McCormick) among others The Commercial Block contains many buildings built between 1830- 1840 including: Pabst Brewery - original building remains extant; Wm Fisk Brewing Company - two extant buildings; Jenifer Glass Works - original building remain extant; Hanna Manufacturing Company - one extant building ; Hennepin Beer Company - original building remains extant In addition several brick buildings have been demolished since 1850 including: Masonic Temple No 2 / Post Office Building - demolished c1900s while still standing high enough so that you can see parts thereof still upon entering via side door but primary facade has collapsed due to weathering & fire damage; Masonic Temple No 3 / Free Library Building – demolished c1910s while also remaining high enough so that you can see some portions thereof still upon entering via side door but primary facade has collapsed due to weathering & fire damage
