The Cleveland Heights Coast Guard Station was established in 1898 and played a significant role in the city's development. The station has been around for over 100 years and is one of the oldest coast guard stations in the United States. The Coast Guard Station can trace its origins to 1898, when Captain George W. Ladd was appointed as the first commanding officer of the Cleveland Heights Coast Guard Station. The original building on East Ninth Street served as the station's Headquarters until 1935. In 1941, Captain Harry Bowers became Commanding Officer of the Cleveland Heights Coast Guard Station and oversaw a number of acquisitions such as a new harbor master's house, an ice cream truck garage, and a new training academy for recruits. Captain Bowers also led the establishment of several new programs including Operation Neptune's Spear which focused on providing security for downtown Cleveland during World War II; Operation Jupiter which targeted vessels smuggling alcohol across Lake Erie; andOperation Freedom which conducted search and rescue missions off shore during Hurricane Katrina. - In 1951, captain Harry Bowers organized "Cleveland Heights Auxiliary Patrol" which became one of America’s most celebrated coast guard auxiliary units ferrying individuals to/from recovery efforts following hurricanes Carla (1951) and Noel (1953). - In 1974, captain Harry Bowers retired from his command after more than 20 years with CGHSS & helped transition to use resources from various other agencies across Greater Cleveland
