The Cleveland Heights, Ohio Army National Guard unit has a rich history dating back to the Revolutionary War. The first military unit in what is now Cleveland Heights was founded on November 14, 1775 under the command of Colonel George Mason. The Garrison Battalion of the 2nd Regiment, Continental Army was organized and raised in response to the Boston Tea Party. The unit served in combat during the American Revolution and saw action at Bunker Hill and Saratoga. In 1868, when Cleveland Heights became a city, the 1st Regiment Infantry was activated as part of municipal forces. In 1896, when Cleveland Heights joined the United States Military Academy at West Point, its units were redesignated as a regiment within that school’s company system. That same year saw the activation of the 3rd Regiment Infantry (now contractionally known as Headquarters and Headquarters Company) which traces its lineage back to 1861 when it was organized as an infantry battalion under General Danner’s command at Camp Chase located on Ely Avenue in downtown Cleveland. Today, there are over 40 active duty members of our regiment headquartered here in Cleveland Heights! Our reunion events annually attracts soldiers from all corners of America who are curious about their ancestors who fought for our country – both past and present!

The following year saw another major change when Abraham Lincoln signed legislation creating cleveland township on November 12th 1863; this provided for limited self-government within a boundaries that would eventually encompass much more than just what is now downtown Cleveland neighborhoods including Highland Park (northwest corner), Woodlawn (southwest corner), Chauncy(southeast corner), Euclid Avenue/1912 State Road No.(east side), and parts of Beachwood Hills west side). With incorporation came further growth as citizens voted to allow commercial development along Lake Erie Boulevard near University Circle while also authorizing new schools such as basketball powerhouse Notre Dame High School which opened in 1922 adjacent to Wrigley Field ballpark becoming one reason why downtown business districts have grown rapidly throughout recent decades despite dropping industrial employment rates In 1939–40 there were only 1 or 2 blocks south of Euclid Ave between Superior Ave & Lorain Rd housing 4 Jewish families displaced from Stamford Ct & Overbrook Estate due to anti-Semitism riots on Brownsville Rd – today’s limits are 8 blocks east from Superior Ave stretching back to Ridgeview Blvd In 1951–52 Goodman Manufacturing Company merged with Singer Sewing Machine Company making it one company that controlled most eastern OH industry for over 50 years until being taken over by IBM Corporation in 1984
