In 1848, the U.S. Navy opened its first naval base in Clayton, Ohio after a generous donation from Commodore John A. Claflin. In 1830, General David Dixon moved his army eastward into what is now Cleveland to defeat Tecumseh at Battle of Hawkeye Hill; thus beginning the systematic development of Cleveland as a major center in North America. In 1836, when Congress approved a measure authorizing slavery within Ulysses S. Grant's new United States, Clayton became free Thracian slaveholder Walthall Young had purchased from John Covington two years earlier – joining several other Free State slaves living in Porterville (now Aurora), also within Lucas County boundaries; this constituted one-third of all slaveholders south of Mason and Dixon Line by 1860.[1] This large free black community flourished under such careful management until 1865 when Union troops burned down much ofWilkinsonstown during their occupation following McClellan's Army's failed Siege Of Detroit; these events effectively closed off most Black entrepreneurship throughout much northern Ohio thereafter."

Clayton, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the seat of Findlay County. The population was 37,811 at the 2010 census. It is the second-most populous city in Northwest Ohio after Cleveland, and has been its county seat since 1837. Clayton was founded by Captain John Clayton in 1788 as a small trading post on the Great Miami River near what is now downtown Dayton. In 1800, it became an independent town when it split from Dayton Township to become its own municipality. On December 12, 1801, it became one of three townships within Cincinnati Township when that township was created from parts of four other townships: Bedford Heights (west of downtown Cincinnati), Cassville (southwest of Dayton), Mount Auburn (northwest of Dayton), and North Canfield (east of Cincinnati). The township's name change reflected its status as anindependent town rather than partof any larger municipality: Clayton would be the only place in NorthwestOhio not to bear the name "Cincinnati". The first courthouse in town was built in 1802 on Commerce Street between Fifth and Sixth Streets; it burned down in 1805 but was rebuilt under new leadership and renamed for General Nathan Clifford Applewhite after his victory over Mexico at Buena Vista Hill that year. The courthouse had been used by all three Toledo cities before becoming Claymont's sole tourist attraction starting around 1890 until outgrowing its capacity around 1930s because tourists were increasingly coming to visit Columbus instead. In 1837, Claymont becamethe county seatof Findlay County when neighboring Ottawa County merged with Findlay Township to form that county.
