The Clayton Naval Weapons Station has been a part of the Ohio Navy since 1898. The station was at the time one of the most important naval installations in the United States, and it played an important role in American naval history. In 1959, the weapons station was transferred to Navy Control.
Clayton is a city in Morrow County, Ohio, United States. The population was 27,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Morrow County and home to the Clayton Municipal Airport. The town of Clay was laid out by Capt. John Dutton in 1796 and named for him. The first post office was established in 1801, and the first store was built in 1805. In 1817, a sawmill was founded here by John Hinkleman and became one of the largest employers in Clay until it closed operations in 1907. A gristmills were also built here during this time frame; one remained active until it burned down in 1912. In 1897, Ohio Statehood came into being, and as a result, Clay became part of Ohio Territory. In 1903-1904, it served as the capital of Morrow County under then-Governor David Dixon. Following statehood, development took hold here with several large construction projects starting up such as an interstate highway system and an airfield which would later be renamed for General George Smedley Butler (a hero of World War I). Today Clayton is known for its small-town feel with its wide variety of businesses from small familyowned stores to locally owned restaurants and breweries; however there are also many large businesses that have opened up over time including Cummins Engine Company (the world's second largest diesel engine manufacturer), Job Corp., FirstEnergy Corporation (former owner of Cleveland Browns football team), Apple Inc., Univision Communications Services LLC (UCS) - all major players within their industries who have made nearby Euclid their regional headquarters for much of their business activity while still maintaining some level of local control over claytons functions/operations
