The first settler in what is now Clayton was Alexander Pope who arrived in 1812 along with Isaac Dibble and others from Delaware Township in what is today Zanesville. In 1830s two other towns were founded: Bethel (now an unincorporated community) east of Clayton and Parkersburg (now Westlake), west of Clayton on high ground overlooking Bothnia River valley between hills to the southward that had been donated by William Hennepin for his farmstead known as "Hennepin's Hill." In 1840 John Smedley built a sawmill on Mill Creek near present day Centerville Road/Route 1411 within sight but not reachable by wagon due to bluffs along stream bed; this mill continued operation until 1893 when it burned down due to faulty construction causing extensive damage to downstream property including mills operated by Prentice-Hall publishers then located just beyond Centerville Rd., now part of unincorporated Parkersburg village Lots 6 through 10 within Parkersburg Village boundaries; many pieces still remain illustrating how much transportation there once was & importance those early days Claytons experienced! The townspeople decided they would name their new settlement after General George Washington so soon after he died; however General Washington's grave remains unmarked within downtown Clayton for over 150 years! During World War II all businesses closed except one – an air base where military planes parked during exercises were serviced - which continued operations until 1948 when it too closed due to lack of maintenance funds plus increased competition from larger cities nearby! Today only about 2% original clintonite remains inside downtown core while most everything else has long since been replaced or torn down!! All these changes have led to someoliath growth rates for both population & economy!! What started small grew into something quite large hereabouts! In 1978 Claytons first post office opened under license from Dayton post office #1 functioning as a general store before becoming its own separate business entity under name "Clayton Post Office" again serving residents until 1991 when that business merged into Dayton post office #2!!! In 2001 they changed their name back to "Clayton" following approval by voters via referendum!!! Their slogan during this time was "the perfect place for you!" And they have kept that slogan ever since!!!
