Clayton, Ohio is a town in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 3,971 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron–Canton–Youngstown metropolitan area. The first settler in Clayton was John Fenton and his family who arrived in 1796. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson's forces burned down the village to prevent its capture by the British during the Battle of Fort Mifflin. The village was rebuilt and named for Major General Philip Henshaw Clay after he donated land for it in 1824. A post office was established at Clayton in 1827, and remained in operation until 1840. In 1830, a canal was constructed through Clayton which made it an important transportation center with shipyards and plantations located there. The town began to decline following World War II when industry departed for greater production areas such as Toledo and Cleveland. However,Clayton has seen some resurgence since the late 1990s with new businesses being founded such as Gorgon Glassworks and Olde English Brewing Company.
Clayton was founded in 1790 by James Wilkinson, a Revolutionary War soldier and member of the Ohio Company. The town grew rapidly thanks to the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825 and its contribution to the development of the Great Lakes region. In 1840, Clayton became the county seat of Lucas County. In 1907, Clayton was renamed for former Secretary of State James Fenton Clayton after he donated $10,000 to help finance a new courthouse and city hall. The city hall remains as one of downtown Clayton's most popular attractions today.
