Circleville is a small town in the United States. It is located in the northernmost part of the state of Ohio, on the border of Michigan and Indiana. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. The name "Circleville" likely comes from two streams that flow through it- Circleville Creek and Little Circleville Creek. The name was first applied to a place west of town by settlers who named it after their home county, Cook County. In 1831, General William B. Harrison built a military fort at what is now known as Fort Harrison on Little Circleville Creek. As early as 1836, he had been planning an expedition against Canada which would include his brother James K. Harrison as commander-in-chief; however this plan never came to fruition because of Indian raids into our area (then part of Canada). In 1837, John Cavanaugh organized a Methodist Episcopal church in what is now known as downtown Circleville and started preaching there about six weeks before he died suddenly while out preached to a large congregation near Greenville Township in neighboring Wayne County (now Kent County). Reverend Cavanaugh's death marked the beginning of what would become an annual sermon series called "John Cavanaugh's Message." In 1840, George Hinkle founded the first store in downtown Circleville and began selling goods such as flour, butter, eggs and bacon from his house on Main Street. By 1850, there were eleven stores operating in downtown Circleville with over one hundred employees and $4 million worth of merchandise sold annually! A post office was established at Circleville in 1848; it operated until 1906 when it was moved to Painesville
