Circleville is a community in Mahoning County, Ohio, United States. The population was 7,914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland-Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1811 as a small village on the Scioto River near what is now Circleville Township. In 1835, it became a town and remained so until 1907. The name "Circleville" originated from the fact that two main branches of the Scioto River met here: one coming down from Lake Erie and another coming down from the mountains to form the river’s namesake creek. The first settler in Circleville was John Gorman and his family who came from Ireland in 1795. They built a log cabin on what is now Main Street and named it Gormanstown after themselves.
