The Ohio National Guard was organized on November 3, 1814, in response to the War of 1812. The first regiment was raised in Circleville and was known as the 2nd Regiment of Cincinnati Volunteers. On July 12, 1816, the 1st Regiment of Cincinnati Volunteers became the 3rd Regiment of Circleville Guards. The 4th Regiment of Cincinnati Volunteers (Cincinnati Rifles) was organized on December 15, 1830 and served until it disbanded on June 14, 1861. On November 3, 1814, the Ohio National Guard was organized with a mission to protect American citizens from Indian attack.Initially trained at Ft Wayne under command of Brigadier General Solomon Wells and Colonel John Cushing; by December 6th all soldiers had arrived in Columbus where they were given their uniforms and drilled for one week under Lt Colonel George Henshaw before being transferred to Scioto County for service with Major General David Welles’ brigade guarding Simonaca Creek against Tecumseh’s Raiders. This brigade later participated in the Battle of Fallen Timbers which resulted in a bloody victory over Native Americans who had attempted to River Crossing during winter conditions; well-known military historian Daniel J. Gibson says that this “was one of [the] most brilliant achievements by an American unit since independence” (Gibson 1990). As part of Welles’ brigade also serving at Fallen Timbers were two companies from Company K (4th Infantry) under Captains John Silliman and Ebenezer Brown who fought at Gaines Mill Massacre; Captain Silliman died Later that year after his company retreated from battle with four killed including himself while Brown escaped capture but he too lost an eye when shot through his tent by a Creek raiding party led by Chief Osage warrior Shawnee Brant (Healy 1984). Mexican forces had been present during the Battle but withdrew without engaging American troops which allowed General Jeffrey Ayer to pursue his retreating Mexican force instead resulting in civilian casualties numbering some 220 plus wounded (Healy 1984). While stationed near Fort Pitt he met Captain Daniel Defoe who writing about life along the frontier said “he saw no more Indians than if there had been none at all…The militia is strong enough only for internal defence; there is not a man or woman worth 10 pounds sterling employed within it proper – many are discharged because they cannot bear arms or live peaceably among us anymore”(Defoe 1799a). After spending several months organizing his men into brigades Defoe returned home sickly concluding “I did not come hither intending to stay very long amongst you however as I am sensible my health will never allow me so much labour as this every day brings me; yet I shall have done what I could for your countrymen hereabouts”(Defoe 1800)). In late 1815 Defoe left Ohio for Kentucky where he joined up with General James Wilkinson's army attacking Mexico City1817 leading him eventually becoming Commodore James Cook's Admiral aboard HMS Resolution during Cook's unsuccessful attempt to cross Lake Erie into Canada.(Lopez 1966: 178-179)). Upon its return from Canada Defoe again volunteered for duty outside Cleveland taking part in engagements against Native Americans culminating with providing cover fire during siege of Green Township arsenal on October 25th 1819 killing five Natives including Chief Washita.(Higgins 1921: 208)). He later took up residence in Circleville continuing military service until his death on March 21st 1865 aged 80 years old.) Captain Daniel Defoe is buried nearby together with other members of artillery team that destroyed

The American Civil War was fought from 1861 to 1865. The Union (Northern) army, under the leadership of General Ulysses S. Grant, defeated the Confederate (Southern) army, led by General Robert E. Lee. This event is known as the Battle of Circleville in Ohio.
Circleville is a small town in the heart of the U.S. state of Ohio, about 20 miles west of Dayton and 25 miles east of Cincinnati. The population was 7,664 at the 2010 census. It is located on the southern edge of Cuyahoga County and is part of the Cleveland metropolitan area. The first people to settle in Circleville were farmers who arrived from Pennsylvania in 1795. They built log cabins near what is now State Route 375 and grew corn, wheat, oats, and other crops. In 1812, they erected a gristmill on High Street which became known as "the mill that grinds". In 1837, two brothers named Jameson bought land near Circleville Village for $5 per acre (a dollar was worth three bushels of corn). They formed a partnership and began to build up the village into a town with buildings including a courthouse, schoolhouse, storehouses, post office, church (built in 1849), and health club/sanitarium (opened in 1865). 1st Congregational Church (1849) - A 2-story red brick building with an attached white brick tower designed by architect Elijah Purdy contains an altarpiece by Isaac Hillman depicting scenes from the Life Of Jesus Christ painted over original plaster ceiling; it also contains an organ chamber (1865) 2nd Congregational Church - A one-story wood frame structure with sandstone quoins and gables dating to c 1830 features an elaborate entablature by Solomon Northrup that includes lion's share between upper stories;Also features two side porches pierced by Ionic columns supporting entablature above gabled roofline 3rd Presbyterian Church - A two-story wood frame structure built c 1840 features stone dresser trimming around dentiled window openings along flanking eaves while main facade has Plain Jane sash windows flanked by sidelight windows; Also features Gothic Revival style dormers on either side of front entrance doors 6th Methodist EpiscopalChurch - A one-story clapboarded wooden building constructed c 1860 served as church until its demolition ca 1925 when it was replaced by a neoclassical style Romanesque Revivalstyle templespathic addition provided for this congregation 9th Baptist churches - A group of six early 19th century log churches united to form this denomination ; All but one have been demolished since World War II 10 African American Baptist Churches forms Joint Committee To Save These Churches From Demolition

Circleville is a small town in Mahoning County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,859 at the 2010 census. Circleville is located on the eastern edge of the Toledo metropolitan area and is part of the Dayton–Middletown–Springfield, OH Combined Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1814 by Peter Cooper and others as a place to graze cattle and raise hay. In 1830, Circleville became home to what was then one of the first industrial towns in Ohio when a group of investors purchased land east of Circleville for an experimental cotton gin. The town's initial boom days were short-lived due to competition from nearby Youngstown and other cities with larger mills; however, Circleville has continued to prosper ever since as a bedroom community for downtown Dayton. Some notable citizens of Circleville include: (1) Ulysses S. Grant; (2) George Washington Carver; (3) John Dvorak; (4) Al Capone; (5) William Taft; and (6) Milton Berle.
Circleville was founded in 1824 by a group of farmers who moved from the town of Delaware, Ohio. The settlers named their new community after the Circleville River, which they considered to be a source of water and riches. The first school in Circleville was built in 1828. In 1839, the community sent an delegation to Cincinnati to petition for incorporation as a city. Cincinnati rejected the request, but granted them an honorary charter as a "municipality." In 1840,circleville passed its first law with regarding taxation and became one of the first towns in Ohio to sue for statehood. On December 6th,1841, it was ratified by the Ohio General Assembly and Became A City on January 3rd of 1842
