The Cincinnati Infantry was among the first American armies to be deployed in World War I. The unit fought in France and Belgium, before being sent to the United States in October of 1917. The Cincinnati Infantry became a part of the 9th Infantry Division, which was created on November 1st, 1917. The division served in France until April 1918, when it was returned home. In May of 1918, the division participated in the Battle of Belleau Wood. After suffering heavy losses, the division surrendered on June 6th. The Cincinnati Infantry is one of few American armies that has not been abolished or disbanded since World War I.

The Cincinnati Military District was created on November 3, 1887 following the creation of the United States Army. The district covered all of Ohio and Kentucky. It included a total of sixty-six infantry battalions, ten cavalry companies, one artillery battalion, and two signal companies. On December 12, 1903 the army merged with the Department of War which had been created on October 1, 1900. This merger resulted in the addition of three new infantry battalions: The 101st (Ohio), 102nd (Kentucky), and 103rd (Indiana). One cavalry company was also added to each battalion.

However even during tough times there were always those who championed innovation and entrepreneurship*: One such entrepreneur* was Fred Lehmberg who started our now iconic Duquesne Brewery* in 1903†(* Duquesne Ale is today available all over Greater Cincinnati*) Eventually this business would lead to several other successful ventures including our current flagship restaurant Brands Hatch** (* Branded Haxby BBQ can be found throughout Greater Cincinnati), plus numerous retail stores (including Macy’s department store back then) which helped keep downtown alive until recently when advances in technology has largely taken over*(* Today you can find many popular restaurants like Papa John’s Pizza tucked away among office buildings or along stadiums etc.). This resurgence began about 25 years ago when we partnered with Parma University to create our world-renowned Center for Urban Arts & Design*******(* Today artist studios housing high quality art galleries are located all around downtown)); however even before this significant investment our Downtown had begun experiencing significant revitalization*******(* Recently entire blocks have been renovated or rebranded inside historic buildings)).
