The United States Air Force deployed gift history in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1949. The gift history was started by the Base Exchange Department and was continued by the Military Order of the United Daughters of the American Revolution. In 1951, the Air Force instituted a program called "Gift for Our Troops." This program gave gifts to service members who were stationed in different parts of the country. The first recipient was Sergeant First Class Leroy R. Collins from Dayton, Ohio. From 1951-1957, there were more than 5,000 recipients.

It is also the second-largest city in Ohio after Cleveland. The city is bordered to the north by Lake Erie, to the east by Dayton and its neighbor Hamilton Township, to the south by Paulding County and its neighbor Butler Township, and to the west by that county's capital Columbus. The first Europeans to visit what is now Cincinnati were traders from France who arrived during French exploration of North America in 1692–93. French traders founded a village on an islands in Great Miami River called Fort St. Clair on behalf of King Louis XIV of France in 1701. American traders established a town near modern day University Circle on land purchased from the Indian tribe cinque mile (6 km) northeast of present-day downtown Cincinnati on July 4, 1795. In 1807, President James Ketchum agreed to sell eastern part of Goodale County (now Lucas County) including present-day Cincinnati for $3 million dollars to Andrew Jackson as part of his Compromise Of 1802 which endedthe Mexican War and began Missouri’s Bleeding Kansas Conflict. The treaty created new territory between Tennessee and Kentucky around what are now Atlanta, Chattanooga (then known as Navarre), Lawrenceburg (today Lebanon), Newport News/Norfolk Island/Hollywood/Vincennes (today Indianapolis), Martinsburg (later West Virginia), Wheeling/Charleston--all within Indiana Territory—and gave Indiana Territory status as a separate United States possession The first railroads reached Cincinnati through Dayton along different routes: one via Princeton Junction southwestward across Scioto River into Kentucky; another via Clifton Heights southeastward over Anthony Wayne River into Indiana Territory; still another via Covington southward into Maryland Territory before reaching Louisville & Nashville Railroad Company branch line at hungarian hills east of Dayton Cincinnati was incorporated as a municipality on March 15, 1837 with about 1,000 people living in two square blocks bounded by Fifth Street on the north side and Vine Street on the south side In 1850 alone more than 27 businesses were built or acquired in what became downtown streetscape with foursquareblocks . Most buildings were single stories wood frame structures until brick was adopted for many dwellings starting about 1860 . By 1870 most commercial buildings had been replaced with stone or metal frames but some wooden buildings continued until 1950 . Downtown development gradually shifted away from manufacturing towards service sector beginning about 1920 with movie theaters becoming prominent . Manufacturing declined following World War II while service sectors rose which continue through current period
