Chillicothe, Ohio is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio. The population was 9,769 at the 2010 census and 12,871 at the 2016 estimate. It is part of the Columbus metropolitan area. Chillicothe was founded in 1814 as a small settlement on the Scioto River by Nicholas Vail and his family. Today, it is one of the most populous and culturally significant towns in central Ohio and has been home to many famous people including General George Washington and United States President James K. Polk. The name "Chillicothe" comes from nearby Chilliconetown which means "small village on the Scioto." The first settler in Chillicothe was Nicholas Vail who arrived in 1814 with his family from Pennsylvania. He named his new town after himself, Chillicothe (pronounced CHILLIK-uh-tuh). In 1821, he married Rachel Whetstone and moved to what is today known as Chilicote Township near Lima, Ohio so that their families could have easier access to land for farming purposes. Although there were other early settlers in this area such as John Mudd (1793-1864), they all followed suit with Vail becoming one of the most active merchants in the community during its earliest days. In 1830, when Chillicothe voted to become an incorporated township, Vail became its first treasurer and served until his death eight years later. The early 20th century was a time of growth for Chillicothe with hordes of newcomers coming seeking opportunities for economic opportunity within a fledgling country still reeling from Reconstruction following America's Civil War era victory over southern slave states – things only grew worse for minorities starting around World War II when discrimination against Jewish refugees increased along with xenophobia towards those deemed "foreigner" or "non-American." Despite these hardships, however, many physical changes took place during this period: construction began on what would become present day downtown; businesses opened up; homes were built; churches were constructed; schools were established; and restaurants started popping up all across town like never before! It wasn't until 1968 that voters finally passed an ordinance allowing women to vote without men having to be consenting adults - something that would only come about gradually throughout subsequent decades given cultural attitudes towards women at that time (and still does today). However, despite some challenges along the way – notablyardo Jimeno being elected mayor twice but ultimately losing each time due to term limits – chillicoothans had always been more than just another small town until quite recently…
