Gourmet Coffee History in Chillicothe, Ohio Chillicothe, Ohio is home to the world’s first gourmet coffee shop. The shop was founded by two friends, John and Bessie Larkin in 1951. The store initially served only coffee and ice cream. However, over time, the store began to offer other items such as pastries and pies. In 1978, the Larkin family sold the business to their daughter-in-law Jacqueline Currie. Currie continued to operate the business until her death in 2001. AtCurrie’s death, her son Jay Currie took over operations of the shop. This current management team has been running the business since 2003. Gourmet Coffee history in Chillicothe goes back even further though! In 1857, a man by the name of Jonathan Brown opened a small grocery store on Elm Street in Chillicothe that later became known as Brown’s Cookery & Brewery (now UTC). Initially serving just bread and beer, Brown soon started making coffee too! His coffee beans were roasted at his brewery and then shipped to different stores throughout central Ohio for purchase by customers. Brown eventually closed his brewery in 1869 but continuation of his coffeebusiness continued under new ownership until 1908 when it was sold to JH Henschel & Sons (now JHL Coffee). From 1908-1951 there were several owners of this small grocery store before it passed into private hands again until it reopened as The Gourmet Coffee Shop on Elm Street within walking distance of downtown Chillicothe in 1951 by entrepreneur Bessie Larkin with husband John being an active part of everything from start up to daily operation including taste testing new products addition! He also assisted his wife often times supplying ingredients needed for their famous chocolate pies that they enjoyed immensely! Chillicothe coffee history can be traced back to the early 1800s, when a group of farmers in the town started roasting their own beans. The first store in Chillicothe was founded by Capt. John Brown and his family in 1818. By 1830, there were six stores around town with a total of eighty-six customers. In 1876, Captain John Brown's son, Nathan Brown opened the last store in Chillicothe and also served as its first Mayor. After Captain John Brown's death, his son took over the business until it closed in 1942. It wasn't until after World War II that Chillicothe began exporting its coffee to other countries. In 1951, Nathan Brown's grandson, Artie Brown reopened the business as the only grocery store left in Chillicothe and continued serving local residents until it closed in 1984. In 1996, Artie Brown's great-grandson NeilBrown reopened the store under new management and continues serving local residents today as Noodle House Coffee Company.

Chillicothe is the county seat of Ross County and the largest city in Ross County. It is also home to Chillicothe State University, one of the most comprehensive universities in Ohio. The first Europeans to visit what is now Chillicothe were Native Americans, who named it "Chellicohe". In 1814, General John Stark's army invaded Canada and camped near present-day Chillicothe while besieging Fort Erie on Lake Erie. General William Henry Harrison's army passed through this area on their way north to battle George Washington at Yorktown in 1781, and some soldiers from Stark's army stopped at what is now Chillicothe while they visited Harrison's encampment on October 25th (the day after Thanksgiving). Today, Chillicothe is just an unremarkable village located near Dayton and Cuyahoga Falls on the edge of Lake Erie. Nevertheless, its history is significant for two reasons: first because it was once home to a large number of Hungarian immigrants who fled their communist homeland during World War II; second because it served as an important center for Republican politics during the Cold War era. In recent years, however, much attention has been given to Chillicothe due to its location within easy reach of major metropolitan areas (including Cincinnati and Cleveland) and its unique history which makes it an interesting place to visit even if you're not interested in historical significance.
