Chillicothe is a small, historically significant town in Northwest Ohio. The town was founded by the Wright brothers in 1847 and is named after the Chillicothe Creek that flows through it. The population of Chillicothe was 9,792 at the 2010 census. The town has been home to many famous Americans, including George Washington and James K. Polk. In 1907, Chillicothe became the first city in America to have electric service. In 1912, the United States Congress passed a resolution recognizing Christmas as an official holiday in Chillicothe. Chillicothe, Ohio is a town in Hardin County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,822 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbus Metropolitan Statistical Area. Chillicothe was founded in 1803 by Nicholas Cline and his family as a station on the Miami and Erie Railroad. The townspeople were originally called "Clineville" after Nicholas's father-in-law, David Cline. In 1824, Chillicothe became the capital of Ohio when it was moved from Cincinnati to Chillicothe under the terms of the Treaty of Chicago between the United States and Great Britain. On July 8, 1828, Chillicothe was incorporated as a city with a population of 602 people. The first post office in Chillicothe was opened in 1831; it closed in 1865. The community name derived from its location on an old trade route between central Kentucky and eastern Michigan Territory (now West Virginia). When Illinois became an American state in 1818, most residents migrated eastward to become citizens of new states such as Illinois or Indiana; however, some stayed behind to form what would eventually become Chillicothe Township. By 1830, over one-third of all residents had decided to move away from their original homes because malaria had arrived in that area for the first time from Africa via travelers entering through Miami Valley into Pennsylvania en route to Detroit. In 1833–34 local farmers formed a society known as "The Mechanics' Benevolent Association" which purchased 640 acres (2 km2) along Center Avenue northwest of downtown for $1 per acre (3 hectares). Their goal was to provide employment for local mechanics who were being forced out of business by transportation improvements made by George Stephenson beginning around this time. This group later bought 2 other parcels totaling 7 miles (11 km) north – these tracts became known collectively as Canal Heights – and began construction on what would become today's downtown core including much of today's State Capitol building complex and many other buildings still standing today including City Hall and several stores/cafés/bars along Center Avenue near where it meets US Route 21 before continuing westward across US Route 20 towards modern day Toledo
Chillicothe was founded in 1790 by George Washington and his wife Martha. It became a city in 1813, and the current location was chosen in 1836. The first post office was opened in Chillicothe on December 10, 1830.
