Centerville is a small town in Findlay Township, Butler County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lima-Canton-Muncie Metropolitan Statistical Area. Centerville was founded in 1811 by Captain George Williams and his family as an agricultural community on a tract of land near what is now Fayetteville. The first mill in Centerville was built by John Ladd and Wm. Hays about 1815. A post office called Centerville was established in 1827, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1908. In 1881, Centerville became the site of the centennial celebration of Ohio's admission to the Union as a republic. A large parade and picnic were held there that weekend, including demonstraitions by local athletes and military units from across the United States. In 1902, Centerville became home to one of America's first water tower buildings when its own water system was installed. That same year saw the opening of Copley Glass Company plant on Main Street; this company would become one of CENTERVILLE'S most important economic drivers over ensuing decades In 1949–1950, Centerville played host to both the annual Buckeye football game (the first time such an event had been staged in Ohio) and also the annual Strawberry Festival which featured several thousand guests from all around central Ohio The centennial celebration included many festivities including a fireworks display over Muskingum River Canyon north of town center on Saturday night; a picnic with live music at Fairgrounds Park on Sunday; exhibits featuring old equipment from various businesses; performances by local choirs throughout Saturday evening; and a dinner/dance program presented by Mrs. JT Whitehurst at Shepherds Lodge on Sunday afternoon .
