Centerville is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Champaign County. The population was 31,521 as of the 2010 census. It is located on the southern edge of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign campus. Centerville is also home to IAWR National Bank and First National Bank, both founded in 1881. Centerville's history began with a few pioneers who set up camp near what would become Centerville in 1836. The first settler in Centerville was John Whitehead, who homesteaded land around present day Wright Road and Park Avenue in 1839. One year later, James Muhlenberg established a gristmill on the east side of Wright Road. A sawmill was erected on nearby Gilmore Drive in 1840 by Solomon Gregg & Sons; this mill continues to operate today as part of First National Bank. In 1841, David Wilkinson built a wagon shop and store on State Street between Center and Fifth avenues; this business continued until it burned down in 1865. In 1845, John Sibalis arrived from Pennsylvania with his family and started trading goods out of his wagon shop into Champaign County for farmers before moving onto larger items such as barrels and staves from eastern Canada he had been trading for years himself. By 1850, Sibalis had organized some other traders into an effort to open a post office at Centerville; this venture failed due to lack of interest from the local populace at that time (the town originally consisted onlyof five homes). However, two years later when mail service arrived through Champaign County via horseback riders delivering mailbags overland instead of wagons (this mode of transportation being unreliable during those days), Centerville became one of just three communities within Champaign County along with Bloomington (the county seat) and Galesburg (the extreme northwestern corner). In 1861 when Ohio became a state, Centerville voted to join it; however it did not gain full rights until 1870 when its charter was amended permitting it to levy property taxes!
