Centerville is a town in Franklin County, Ohio, United States. The population was 7,822 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbus metropolitan area. The land that would become Centerville was first settled in 1788 by George Washington and his family on a large tract of land awarded to him by the British Crown. The name "Centerville" originated from nearby Mount Vernon and was applied to a small community located east of it on High Street (now US Route 224). By 1811, Centerville had become an important transportation hub due to its location at the junction of two main wagon roads - one leading west to Cincinnati and one leading east to Toledo. In 1812, Centerville became home to the first school in Ohio and later served as the seat for both Franklin County and Mahoning County. In 1815, General John Brown's forces defeated Fort Wayne's garrison at Battle Creek during the Second Battle of Fallen Timbers; this event helped spark American independence from Great Britain. As a result of this victory, Hamilton College (later Ohio State University) was founded in Centerville by Horatio Gates in that year. In 1816-1817, Centerville also saw action during the War of 1812 as part of Colonel Anthony Wayne's brigade under General Ulysses S Grant against Native Americans near what is now Delaware Lake; aftermath of this engagement left many buildings destroyed or damaged including Fort Wayne’s arsenal which still stands today.. In 1830, Centerville became home to one of America’s first amusement parks – Penny Arcade – which continued operation until it closed its doors in 1992 following extensive vandalism attributed to users over time.
