The Navy has been in Celina, Ohio since the 1800s. The first naval vessel to be built in this town was the USS Constitution, which was launched on November 12th, 1801. In 1897, the USS Olympia was commissioned here and served as a training ship for local sailors. In 1922, the U.S. Naval Station Celina opened its doors and continued being used by the navy until it closed in 1969. Ever since then, there have been various ways that the navy has interacted with Celina residents, both through their presence in our community and also through all of their donations to our local economy. One of the earliest examples of this relationship between the navy and Celina is when Commodore James Dewey sailed into town on his flagship USS Olympia on September 8th, 1814 while conducting a military occupation of Brownsville Bayou. This event helped boost business along Cleveland’s bayouside and gave residents an opportunity to see one of America’s greatest warships firsthand. Commodore Dewey also donated goods from his ship to help support local businesses during his stay in town- something that would continue to be common throughout his time as Commodore for both our navy and our local community (Dewey Chapel). Additionally, Admiral George Kincaid made an appearance here on October 7th 1909 when he delivered a speech at Lighthouse Point under cover of darkness (a performance often seen as one of history’s most dramatic moments). This event not only demonstrated American prowess but also alerted neighboring countries about America’s intentions should WW1 break out; something that would later lead to our country becoming more involved abroad than ever before! In 1942-1945 during World War II, Admiral Chester Nimitz made an appearance here while leading Operation Neptune Spear which aimed to capture or destruction of key Japanese targets throughout Southeast Asia- something that even today is still commemorated by naval personnel stationed here! Additionally, many artifacts from this era can be seen scattered around town such as abandoned submarines or torpedoes left behind after battles fought at sea (an example can be found near downtown). Throughout all these years we have maintained close ties with our military heritage- something that continues today with locally recruited members making up part of multiple detachments available within different branches across different parts of America! While certainly not limited to just donations towards celina's economy- marine mammals have also frequently graced our skyline including two whales spotted Frenchman Point recently! Celina was founded in 1814 by Peter Celina and his wife Judith. The first store opened in the village on the Celina River. In 1825, the Celinas founded a gristmill on the confluence of the rivers. The mill produced flour for local consumption and also exported flour to nearby Lawrence, Indiana. The mill was destroyed by fire in 1892 but rebuilt soon after with new machinery. In 1906, the Celinas donated land to establish a high school in Celina which remains today one ofange largest high schools in Northwest Ohio.
