Celina is a town in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 3,827 at the 2010 census. Celina is the name of a creek that flows through the town. The first Europeans to visit Celina were French traders in 1795. There are references to a place called "Celina" as early as 1699. In 1807, John Hicks and his family moved from Greencastle, Indiana to Celina after purchasing land there. They built the first white schoolhouse in what is now Celina. The settlement of CelINA began when some farmers decided to move into what is now the eastern part of Muskingum County in 1821 because they found good soil there and no available water elsewhere. By 1830, all of present-day Muskingum County had been founded by European settlers; however, only about 10% of its population was rural until after 1840 when new railroads came through town and started providing employment for many residents. In 1850, General George Washington Hancock donated 1/4 acre (0.16 km²) for use as a public square in downtown Celina; this then became known as Hancock Square or simply "Hancock". In 1857–58 the Territorial Legislature renamed it "Celina", honoring General William Tecumseh Sherman's visit there two years earlier which had increased trade between Ohio and Michigan Territory thanks to his famous quote "Si quisque idem fecit" or “Every man has done something” (Latin: Si quisque idem facit). It should be noted that Tecumseh's original spelling – Tecumseh – was commonly used throughout much of North America at this time due to lack of distinction between alphabetical letters at that time (note: Ontario spellings such as Teckman still retain this lettering). In 1865 local businessmen formed The Western Union Telegraph Company with $1 million dollars raised from around the country via an initial offering campaign led by Cyrus McCormick & Co., one of Chicago's largest industrialists who wanted easy access to telegraph technology across state lines without investing money into building new infrastructure himself—a key factor in establishing celinalite supremacy over other towns along similar lines on both sides of the great Lakes region during this era. Celina was founded in 1812 by Captain John Celina and his wife Anna as a post office called "The village of Celina" on the east bank of the Scioto River. The first settler to arrive in what is now Celina was Isaac Walton, who arrived with his family in 1815. In 1824, Captain John's brother-in-law Daniel Caldwell bought land in present day Celina from Captain John for $2 per acre. In 1830, Captain John's son George Washington Celina purchased 5 acres (20 hectares) north of today's downtown from Daniel Caldwell for $10 per acre ($1 million at current prices). George Washington had been orphaned at age 10 and had lived with his aunt and uncle until he reached adulthood. He then married Miss Lydia Burchill who owned land west of where he settled and they operated a farmstead known as Cedar Grove until her death in 1840. In 1836–37, David Wright built a mill on the Scioto River which became one of the largest flour mills in Ohio. After years of growth and development due to its importance as an agricultural center during the mid-19th century, celinas Mills were destroyed by fire on October 25, 1865 while being used for storage; this left town without mills until 1978 when a new mill was built just east of downtown that continues to produce flour products today On November 24, 1800 Samuel Hinton donated land southeast of present day Celina for use as a township according to an plat taken December 12th same year The first election held under Township form took place on March 4th 1801 when James White won against Joseph Tenney 3 & 1/2 miles northeast of town nearpresent day High School
