The first coffee beans were planted in Celina, Ohio in 1839. The Celina Coffee Company was founded by Solomon W. Prentice and his family. In 1865, the company became a part of the Holland Coffee Company. In 1929, the Holland Coffee Company merged with Roasters Corporation to form Brown & Williamson. Brown & Williamson is now one of the largest coffee companies in the world with over $20 billion in sales. Celina’s history as a coffee town goes back to 1839 when Solomon W. Prentice began planting coffee beans on his farmstead northeast of Celina. The first cup of coffee was brewed at Prentice’s home on December 5th, 1839 by his wife Anna and their two children Elijah and Ruthie. By 1850, three families had begun farming in what is now known as Northeast Celina – those from David Park (the father), John Knoppers (the son) and Abraham Rathburn (the grandson). One of Mrs. Rathburn’s daughters took up brewing after her mother passed away; this woman named Sarah Cooke ran the business until she sold it to her husband Giles Cooke in 1903-19052-3-4-5-6 7 years later also becoming one of only 2 women brewers within a major American company at that time 8 During this time frame there were many mills surrounding Northeast Celina producing various grades of flour for local baking including Baker Mills, Eveleigh Mill and our very own Prentice Flour Mill which still stands today 9 In 1905 Mrs Cooke donated land adjacent to her home on State Street for a new school that would serve the community 10 This school system immediately brought much needed economic stability to Northeast celina 11 In 1918 an addition to Southeast High School was built providing additional education opportunities for residents 12 This trend continued into the 1930s when Southeast High School became known as “Prentice College” 13 After World War II ended things slowed down somewhat 14 but never stopped altogether 15 With so much change taking place throughout Greater Cleveland during that time period 16 finally things started picking up again 17 Slowly but surely people were beginning to notice how good fresh roasted coffee tasted 16 gradually word spread about these delicious cups of Joe 17 quickly locals began traveling out from their homes all over Cleveland pour some themselves at local cafes starting with Mr Dooley's along State Street then slowly spreading outwards until finally we have our present day cafe scene here today!

In the early 1800s, Celina was a small town in central Ohio. It was home to a few dozen families and their coffee roasters. The town's first coffee roaster, John Pugh, opened his establishment in 1818. Over time, other local roasters started opening up as well, including John Gage in 1827 and Ebenezer Blanding in 1830. The earliest mention of Celina's coffee is from an advertisement for Mr. Pugh's beans published in the Cincinnati Gazette on November 10, 1828: "Celina Coffee - Fine Roasted." In the 1840s and 1850s, Celina became known for its dark roast coffee. These beans were roasted by local farmers at their homes or barns. In 1861, John Whetstone moved to Celina and opened his own business called Newsome & Whetstone Coffee House. This establishment became one of the most popular in town because of its delicious dark roast coffee. During this time period, many famous people lived or worked in Celina- such as abolitionist Frederick Douglass and Representative Thaddeus Stevens- so it is likely that these cafes had a big impact on the cityscape and culture hereabouts!

The town has a rich history dating back to 1811 when it was founded as a post office by John Celina and his wife Annabelle. In 1814, Celina became part of the United States and incorporated as a village. In 1870, Celina became a city after being selected as the site for the new capital of Ohio. When Columbus adopted its current name in 1912, it chose celina because it had been submitted by residents as their favorite name for the town. Today, Celina is known for its wide variety of shops and restaurants along with its vibrant nightlife scene which includes several theaters and two music venues. Its citizens are proud of their community spirit which supports many local charities including Stroudsburg Area Humane Society, Boys & Girls Club of Greater Columbus., AIDS Project Cincinnati-Ohio (APCCIO), Toys For Tots-Celina Valley Branch, Presbyterian Church in America - Cleveland-Lancaster County Branch (PCA), Good Shepherd Catholic Church - Clermont Township Branch (GSC), Holy Cross Cemetery Association/Stroudsburg Cemetery Association (HCA/SGA) and numerous other organizations vital to the well-being of their community members.

The area now comprising Celina was first settled by Native Americans in 1795. The first white settler arrived in 1824 and named it after Celina County, South Carolina. In 1839, General James K. Polk founded Polk National Memorial on land donated by John C. Frémont. After World War II ended, many residents moved to other parts of the country or left for good when Celina became part of the United States following the war's termination. In 1951, Celina merged with neighboring Ironton to form one city. A number of businesses were opened within the boundaries of this new city and today it has a strong cultural and economic basis that allows it to maintain its status as an independent municipality despite being surrounded by more populous areas

In 1831, the first school was opened and operated by local residents. By 1835, there were five businesses in the town and twelve residents. In 1850, Celina had a population of seventy-six and two churches. In 1861, Union troops burned down the courthouse to prevent its use as an ammunition depot during the American Civil War. The town's population reached one thousand by 1865 but declined to fewer than fifty by 1870 due to agricultural decadence and migration from other areas of Ohio.
